6 volt positive ground AC D14

Uh oh. This will open a can of worms. I will start - has it been cranking slow? What the reason for the larger battery? Some of the electrical boys will be along. Some of them can be adjusted but I think it is a bit trial and error. They'll fill you in.

No, it turns over fine. I have used it that way for years, but now need a new regulator and I have forgotten the setting. I really do not want to go back to a 6 volt battery unless the new more powerful ones will turn it over like the 8 volt.

Hey there...does it have a delco generator? If so there is a screw on the back between two of the brushes, loosen it up and slide the brushes closer togather, this will increase the voltage, this is what you want. you want it putting out more than battery voltage, what i mean by that is. if your gen is only putting out 6v it cant fill you 8v battery. it may already be able to do this. you will have to check. I wouldn't want you battery over 9.5 v you may not have to mess with the regulator. to check output of the gen disconnect the wires, put a voltmeter on A and ground F. DO NOT DO THIS FOR AN EXTENED PERIOD OF TIME. there will be smoke. and dollar bill falling out of wallet. this is max gen output. Have you started the tractor yet? an what is it doing, guess I should of asked that first. before i went an a rant,

You dont need to re-set the regulator. With the engine running take a voltage check on the ARM post of the gen. Setting the brushes closer makes it put out more amps. Wont hurt to take a hydrometer reading of the cells that will tell you if the batt is charged should read around 1260

This is a can of worms alright. You've got two opinions on adjusting the generator. I was not aware AC used any adjustable(three brush) generators in tandem with a voltage regulator. (I have seen it on an MF 65)
Seems to me that AC used three brush generators with the hi/lo charge switch and a cut-out.
But then I don't remember when they switched from 6 to 12 volt either.
If you can get 8 volts out of a 6 volt gen., I wouldn't push it much farther than that. Then if it keeps starting you're good.

(quoted from post at 19:18:23 06/24/13) I use an 8 volt battery in the above tractor. What should the 6 volt positive ground voltage regulator be set at. Thanks
he short & direct answer to your question (without the sermons) is 9.6 volts (2.4v per cell).
