OT- .22 ammo

Got a "Cheaper than Dirt" email- ammo on sale. They had .22 Long (not Long Rifle). I've never shot anything other than Long Rifle- what's the difference? Will it work in my old .22?

On some of the very old ones that is all you were suppose to shoot or that is how the barrel was marked. I have an old Remington and it says to shoot shorts or longs in it

.22 Short, .22 Long, and .22 Long Rifle are the "common" .22s out there. Most single shots will shoot all three. Most semi autos will require the .22 Long Rifle (.22 LR).

Bolt actions are usually chambered for .22 LR, they may not properly feed a .22 Long or a .22 Short but most likely there wouldn't be an issue firing the smaller rounds in them if you got one to chamber. I would only do that if you were in a "had to" situation.

My Henry lever action shoots all three without an issue - as it is designed to.

Depends on your old rifle- if not a newer automatic, then likely useable, especially if a tube magazine. Old Marlin tube mag autoloader can use them, Stevens had a short, long, long rifle capability while Ruger 10/22 seems a bit sensitive and fails to feed sometimes and some of the clip feeds are worse- short cycle and can"t get bolt back far enough to feed and sometimes the rounds after first try are shifted forward in clip-old bolt action, most pumps and lever actions will work and revolvers are no problem. Some of oldest rifles and pistols are meant to take the long but not long rifle. With the ammo shortage on some shelves- may as well get it and see if it works-can always use as a single shot. RN

Thanks for the replies.

Its a Monkey Wards, 1958- dad gave it to me when I was 9. Its actually a Mossberg, model 140, I think- bolt action, 7 shot clip.

Sometime around 1972, the spring in the clip broke- I took clip apart, managed to lose the spring and the follower. So stuffed clip with tissue paper and had a single shot, for about 40 years. Recently found a replacement clip from an outfit out of Festus, Missouri. I know it works with LR, so I think I'll stick with them. As some said, it could always be used as a single shot with the longs, but boy, have I ever BTDT! LOL

It should "work" but the reputed reason one hardly sees long anymore is horrid accuracy compared to LR or short. Or so I have read.

Dan, my uncle had a sweet little Browning semi-automatic which was mfg for Shorts only. They were quite common. Tom

I have 400 rounds of WW "Longs". Still in the yellow "brick box and the individual red and yellow W-W boxes. From the 60's but looks like never been outside or in the sun. I don't need it, it wont shoot through my 41 Smith.
Email is open for offer.

If you have a semi-automatic, you need enough whoopie to eject and reload the next round. Only way to know is to test it first.

IIRC the Long is the Long rifle case with the Short bullet. Standard LR bullet is 40 grs, Short is 30 grs if memory serves. The profile and length are different. Myself, I'd buy them if I didn't have any 22's. You never know what a particular rifle will like or dislike till you try them.
