This is my "new" machine. Have owned older tractors for my hunting property and I am not familiar with this one yet. Have read the owners manual, but its written for dozens of models and hard to follow for my specific machine.

Main questions: The rear end make a "hydrostatic-ish" howl when in the low range and working it (plowing/etc) doesn't sound bad, just different then my 46 H and 53 jubilee. Obviously the 71 has more meat in the rear end, wet brakes, etc.,.
I am looking for a good resource regarding the workings of the rear end, Like to know these things. ordered an IT manual, but looking towards the collective experience here first.

Your 4000 has s double reduction rear axle with inboard planatary reduction units on each axle. You might detect a bit of gear noise when working hard but it should NOT "howl."

You yave checked the oil level???

yes. all good with oil level. Perhaps I can get a farmers set of ears on this locally. Like I said, when in the low set of gears (one through four) it sounds kind of like a hydrostatic machine, dont know how else to describe it. No play side to side, no metal flakes in the oil. Just not familiar with this machine, and I pride myself on knowing how things work. How does that double reduction deal work?

They used a set of planetaries in the axle housing.

When you really get them hooked down good and pulling at full power... I guess they can make some whine. I never really noticed it too much over the engine.... A whine is a lot more noticeable at road speed tho.

If you're buying service manuals do yourself a favor and buy the Ford reprints. Yes, it's gonna cost you bucks... but they're well worth the extra money if you're doing any amount of work on the tractor.
