Gleaner corn head questions.

I just bought a gleaner K with a 330 black corn head. My corn is 30" rows so I am ok, but I have a neighbor, and may have more people want me to custom harvest for them that have 36"-38" rows. I know it"s not good to harvest narrow corn with a wide head, but what about wide corn with a narrow head? my neighbor and most farmers in my area will only have about 20 acres each for me to harvest this coming fall. Would it be worth buying a 2 row head? Also What should I check for on 330 head as far as preventitive maintance?

Your head will need to match the row spacing. A 2 row head should be able to do 36-38 ok. Check the tin work over for cracks and large dents. Grab a hold of the snapping rolls and check for looseness and same for gathering chains. Can the center snout be tipped up on the 3 row head. If so dig around and see what is there. The Black head is a decent head to harvest with and maintain. Good luck!

Standing corn of some height may very well be doable but maybe any promises should be held till you make a pass in the wide row corn. Down corn of any degree will most likely prove very difficult and even impossible in some situations.

A Gleaner E with 16.9 tires was a tight fit doing two 36" rows. I don't know if the K is wider. Depending on planter width, guess rows, and so on, you may want to be looking for a three row wide head.

Don't think they made a 3 row wide for an E. Don't know if a head from a K will fit on an E either. We had a 3 row narrow, fit good. You could get a 4row 20inch row head for an E was right in the book I think. Or the 2row wide.
No 36-38 inch rows will not fit good at all. Did that to harvest some we bought from a neighbor back in the late 60's had to run it 2 rows at a time and got none of the down corn since it would break the stalks off to try.

Thanks guys sounds like I just need to invest in a 2 row wide. I don"t think they made a 3 row wide either. Most of the K combines have a 2 row head with them the 3 row is alittle less rare so I know the 2 row will work.

The E, EIII, K, and K2 throat are the same, so headers will "fit". The drives are the challenge as they are different. The lifting capacities also changed over time.
By the time they made the black heads, they had finally "universalized" a little- in that one head would fit several models, but with different mounting packages.
