frost plug question

I have an engine that has a block heater in a frost plug hole. The block heater is junk. I want to install a frost plug. Can I just tap it in clean or do I need to put a sealant around the plug?

They generally will seal "dry" but I use just a tiny amount of Loctite to be 100% sure.

Is it a "Welch plug" that needs to be flattened to grab in place or a cup-type plug?

I clean up the bore with medium sandpaper, then coat the whole back of the plug with Permatex non hardening sealer and hammer it in ...

They can seal well enough on their own - but I usually use a little sealer to avoid annoying weeping that can happen sometimes.

i clean the hole.. and use alil #2 permatex on the plug. if the hole is baddly pitted. rub some around ther and let it set a few minutes.
