PTO adapter

Hello Everyone,
I have a Ford 5610 that has a 540 rpm pto and I also have a 15ft John Deere batwing that I am currently running with my JD 4230.Does anyone know if I can use an adapter and run the cutter with the Ford safely

Thanks

Foxhoun

Is cutter 540 or 1000 rpm granted Ford is 540 JD is 540 or 1000 pto rpm. To my knowledge there's no gear box that could be installed on 540 pto that has 540 input and 1000 output there is however vice-verse.

There is mention of a 1000 gearbox in the JD 730 owners manual. Must be scarce as hens teeth though. Never seen one or heard any talk of anyone having one.

Little more info would be good.

We need to assume the mower is 1000 pto?

Then it would only work well if your tractor has a removable shaft, and can put in a 1000 shaft.

There were a few 560 to 1000 adapters made, but expensive and did not work well. And the 560 pto doesn't have enough strength to run a 1000 implement typically.

Also, will the smaller tractor have enough hp to run the big mower?

JD sold the 1000 rpm gear box with a drawbar extension as a kit. A new kit sold at a dealer's auction probably twenty years ago for $1000. Couldn't justify spending that kind of money twenty years ago when raising a family and trying to buy land, but today is a different story although that thousand is more like two thousand in current dollars. An aftermarket 540 to 1000 rpm are available but last time I looked they were more than $1000 and likely would handle a lot more power than the original JD version.

1000 RPM PTO was introduced when implements and power requirements got higher- PTO shafts turning the slower speed tend to get twisted off due to the torque requirements of higher capacity machines. If you're running 1000 RPM, you only need about half as much torque as one running 540, to get the same work done. I think you'll twist shafts off if you put on an adapter, because your implement will be spinning fast enough to do the job, but you'll still have the higher torque load on the tractor shaft.
