I'M POSTING FOR A FRIEND. HE HAS A INTERNATIONAL MODEL "B"WITH WOODS BELLY MOWER.HE NEEDS TOO SHARPEN THE BLADES. BUT CAN'T SEEM TO GET THE BOLTS.OUT OF THE SHAFT.IS IT O.K. TOO HEAT THE SHAFTS.OR WHAT WOULD BE THE BEST WAY. TOO REMOVE.

The bolts will loosen in the direction the blades turn. They can be very tight some times.

I would not heat them you'll ruin the seals and the fiber washers that are on top and bottom of the blades. Once the seals are ruined that will allow dirt to get into the bearings.

If the mower is an "L59" the bolts are left hand thread.

I wouldn't heat bolts, because the heat transfers up the shaft which will either damage a seal or the bearing.

Get an impact. Like posted below bolt loosen in the direction the blade turns.

I have some pipe I put over the blade and socket wrench. If a longer lever won't work. Use a right angle grinder and sharpen while blade is on mower.

If he knows the actual model number and discharge side, Woods puts all of their manuals on line for free.

Bob, I have 2 6ft woods, one belly mower left hand discharge the other is a rear mower right hand discharge. The left hand discharge is lefty loosey. The right hand discharge is righty loosey.

Both woods mowers, the bolts holding the blades on, get tighter with use. Sometimes I think I'll break something getting them off. That's why I use pipe to hold blade and turn bolts.

I think you're confused. Both of my belly mount mowers are left discharge. The arbors turn counterclockwise (left) looking down from the top. Therefore they turn clockwise looking up from the bottom. Meaning the blade bolts turn counterclockwise (left) to tighten.

Could very well be right hand discharge on a B Farmall if the belt drives off the original belt drive on the tractor. If it drives off the PTO there's a chance it could be left hand discharge. Jim

I had a 5 ft woods belly on an IH C and it was right hand. It used the small shaft above the pto where a flat belt would attach. Woods belly mowers can rotate cw or ccw depending on what tractor it went on.

Yes, there can be Woods mowers with left or right discharge. But, they have different blades, and should be different arbor shafts.
Both of my mowers are left discharge, and have left hand thread blade bolts. In other words they are tightened by turning to the left, which makes them self tightening.

I have a L59 woods that has left hand threads for the blade cap screws and a 59 woods that has right hand threads. Both are very hard to remove with a standard breaker bar. I use my 3/4 drive impact for both with a six point socket. After rounding the heads with a 12 point socket I welded a box end wrench to the hear and used a sledge to get them loose.

B Farmall doesent use PTO but does use the belt pulley drive whether the mower is a 59 or 72 inch. Same drive is used whether the mower is right or left hand blade rotation.

I didn't exactly know what "right hand thread" and "left hand thread" meant, so I looked it up...

Right hand thread is "righty-tighty, lefty-loosey."

Left hand thread is the opposite.

This is as you look "down" on the head of the bolt.

A Woods mower meant for a Farmall B should have left-handed threads, which means turn them right (clockwise) to loosen.

Of course someone could have mounted a Woods mower for a Farmall Cub on the B by purchasing/fabricating the correct brackets, and re-routing the belt. In that case the bolts will loosen by turning them counterclockwise.

Confused yet?

Use an impact to loosen, but only hand-tighten.
