Michigan Milk Snakes

I spotted what I thought was a milk snake this morning. I checked the DNR web sit and except for a very small square in Allegan County, where I live there is either no data or no occurrence. I thought these snakes were rather common. Are they that rare? You guys in Montcalm and Ionia County seeing these snakes?

The DNRs maps for most creatures is outdated to say the least. Caught a big milk snake at Fayette smelter in the UP in 2010. Neat place to take a day long tour.

Sure is. Seems to be a little known attraction too. The wife and I went up there a few years ago. Plan to spend the day and do a fair whack of walking.
 
the ranges of snakes are pretty well known but a lot of detailed information remains to be filled in on local populations. States do Biological Surveys to determine what animals they have & where they live. Some animals & areas have had very little studies done. These studies depend on collecting & preserving specimens, from bears to salamanders. If no one has collected an animal in your area, it will be shown as not there until it is collected.

I would be extremely unhappy to find something like that on my property. If at all possible, it would get acquainted with a 16 ga.
 
I think we are going to try to get there this year again as we are getting into the UP again for a few days on the family vacation.
 
I'm in Ionia county, we had milk snakes around when mom had the
old farm house. Used to find them in the Michigan cellar every so often.
When they tore the old farm house down, they found so many
that the hydro-hoe operator actually set the cement that he was
lifting back down and bashed it with the hoe to kill them!
I haven't seen one in the 11 years since.
