Trailer on Craigslist

Was looking around on Craigslist and came across this trailer.

New 2013 Utility Trailer. 76"' X 16'.
Trailer has 2" BULL-DOG STYLE Ball Coupler,
Clearance lights and tail lights are wire to 4 way flat plug,
4 used 15" Tires and Rims

So can I assume that since this trailer has a 4 way flat wire plug it does not meet state law standards that says all trailers over 2000 lbs GVW must have brakes on all wheels.
And tell me...... Who puts Used tires and rims on a NEW trailer?? (Other than this guy)

We had a tire recycler here. Took tires from retailers, shreaded the worst, sold the rest to trailer manufacturers by the SEMI LOAD for just that use. Got in trouble for selling the Firestones that were recalled a few years back.

John, used tires common on new trailers. I've come across this awhile back while shopping for a flatbed. I guess they do it to keep the cost down after building trailers. Quite a few of them on fleabay like that from places that sell larger quantities. Also, the 4-pin flat thing not out of the ordinary here either. The way it's stated in Illinois I believe is anything over 2999# requires brakes. They keep it right at 3000. Not sure about the double axle requirement though. Then again, like I mentioned, I do live in Illinois.......

In my state you could use that for ag purposes within 150 miles of home without a license or brakes. Tho not a good idea to load it up to that weight and not have brakes.

The same kind of guy who installs a used electrical service on a new building he is selling. :?

No brakes on a 2-axle trailer is illegal in most states, but it's pretty easy to get around the law.

I'd be checking how much weight a 2" coupler is rated for. I think most tandem axle trailers use a 2 5/16" coupler but I could be mistaken.

istaken.

Most likely has two 3,500# axles, so rating for the trailer and load is 7,000#. 2" ball is ok if it has a 1" threaded stem, 3/4" stem is not rated up to 7,000#. Anything over 2,000# total, trailer and load, has to have brakes in Michigan. Ain't no way I'm pullin' 7,000# without trailer brakes.

All that trailer is good for is to haul a couple of quad runners or lawn mowers. Neighbor has one like that and all it has for a frame is angle iron, so don't haul too much or you will bend it.

Sell them all time in Tn like that. If all you need is sq footage and not load capacity why have new tires on a trailer that only gets used a few times a year around town. New tires dry rot over the years too. There are probably a lot more cars and trucks that need better tires than trailers. I agree on having a properly rated ball for your hitch but I will bet that 99 out of 100 vehicles with balls on them the owner has no idea of the ball capacity, they just know it is a 2 inch and it fits.

Not required by code to go through the roof. IF it meets the other code clearance requirements. In my area if it goes through the roof it does have to be back guyed.

I probably put less than half dozen new tires on trailers and that was only because I ruined a tire on someone elses trailer or I didn't have time to run down a used one for mine.[b:7a7f678177][/b:7a7f678177][b:7a7f678177][/b:7a7f678177]

(quoted from post at 08:07:19 06/15/13) Totally not right, no brakes. Some people look only at the $$$ and not if it's safe.

Maybe surge brakes.Dosen't look like it though.

I have a 10,000lb rated 2" ball for a 7000lb GVW bumper pull trailer I tow. I was surprised it was 2" trailer as well. I had to look to find a ball that was rated high enough, most 2" balls are 5000 or 6000 lb unless you go to a dedicated trailer store.

Years ago we built a 2 wheel car trailer for lightweight race cars. The thing had a squat deck design that allowed the rear of the deck to squat to ground level for loading / unloading.
This little trailer had no suspension, in effect the tire sidewall was the suspension.

Put 2 new 6 ply trailer tires on it when we built it, which blew out the tire sidewalls from flexing and heating at very few miles.
I then put a pair of nearly worn out 2 ply car tires on it and had no more tire trouble. Those thin 2 ply car tires took the heat and flexing just fine. Have used that trailer trouble free for more than 30 years, just keep 2 ply tires with less than 50% tred on it.
