Gear Box sealing it up.

I've taken apart the gearboxes on the rear end of my Power King tractor. Each gearbox is fastened to the frame by four 7/16" bolts from the inside of the gearbox to the frame. The pieces of inner tube with holes thru the center put in by a PO did nothing to keep the grease in. What would you use to seal the holes? There has to be washers under the bolt heads on the inside of the gearbox.
What should I use and where can I get it.

Put a good pipe thread sealant on the bolts threads after cleaning and degreasing the internal threads and the bolts.

Pipe thread sealant is good for pipe threads. It is not good for non tapered threads like a bolt would have. The sealing of the box from the inside of the box should be considered. depending on the box and the fastener type, one could probably get away with a tredo washer between the bolt heads and the inside of the box. Are you sure that the bolts are proper for this install or are they something that a previous owner installed as a shortcut. It seems unlikely that anyone with any engineering skills would ask for a seal like you describe. Sometimes an o-ring could be used between the box and the frame but only if there was an o-ring groove to support the assembly.

Let me try again, the bolts go from the inside of the gear box thru the gear box and thru the frame, and the nut is outside the gearbox to hold it to the frame. The seal needs to be under the head of the bolt between the bolt head and the case.
Its been my experience with O-rings in something like this just slide out as you tighten the bolt. So O-rings won't work.

how much clearance is there between the bolt and the outer edge of the hole in the gearbox? Could it be that there is supposed to be a felt seal in there? I know that my AC uses a lot of felt seals for the wheel bearings, steering pedastal and hydraulic control valve.

The part # you are looking for is 01-2509 Gasket, 1" OD .. but it does not say what material it is made from.. you could try Mission Manufacturing, 324 N Brown , Princeton, Id 47670.. Other than that try a cork, nylon or rubber washer backed up by a flat steel washer. The oil level is below the bolts so it should not be a terrible problem. Hope this helps..

Do you guys have Dowty washers? Maybe known by another name?
They are used on hydraulic fittings to create a seal when fitting a probe to the end of a hose, or under a banjo bolt fitting. They are like a steel washer with a rubber seal moulded to it that protrudes over the sides of the washer. This acts like an 'O' ring, but contained by the steel washer so it cannot squeeze out when tightening the bolt.

Looks like copper washers are the way to go
Mcmaster Carr Metric 12--25 washers for $8.70

Dowdy washers Summit Racing 2 for $7...Can't go to Napa, the bunch at the local store can't find the light switch.
Thanks guys

Dowty washer sounds just like what I called a stat-o-seal.Used many in aircraft maint. in fuel systems.
