5055E John Deere tractor electrical problem

Weird deal........yesterday I started to bale hay with this tractor. I pulled into the field, started to engage the pto and it killed the tractor dead. The switch was dead....no restarting. What the heck? I opened up the fuse box and noticed that the 10A fuse for the Start Relay was blown. Whatever.....who knows what caused that. ''Replaced the fuse, tractor started fine....went to engage the pto and it did it again! 'Replaced the fuse again.....yep it blew that fuse again. 'Called the dealer....naturally they didn't have a clue what would cause it to do that. The pto has wiring going to it that sounds a buzzer if you get off the tractor with the pto running. I unhooked the wiring harness to the pto and all worked fine. Except.....that wiring harness has to be connected for the tractor to start. So with the tractor started, I disconnect the harness and the pto engages and I got the field baled. How in the world do I trace those wires to find a "short" that obviously is there? Any ideas?

I"d be really suspicious of the actual switch itself first. The wire may be frayed but you could check that by a continuity check between the wire end at the switch and any ground. I have a 5303 and will look at the wire diagram tonight to see if there is any clue there.

I wondered that too. EAch time I would start to move the pto lever, it would blow that fuse. Naturally, the tractor is out of warranty, so according to the dealer, "Well, just bring it on down and we'll scratch our heads and butts for about 7 hours and "maybe" we can figure it out".
