Farmall H starter problems

tractors

I bought a H from an individul who had been hand cranking the tractor to start. I had the starter rebuilt and it engages with a terrible hitting and grinding sound as the starter tries to turn the engine over. It will go ahead and start if you don't care what it is tearing up. The bendix is new. I have split the tractor apart twice trying to find the problem and the ring gear with the correct number of teeth looks fine. I took starter off another H and it makes
the same hitting and grinding noise as it starts the tractor. What is wrong?

There are no alignment settings for that. Mine hit hard on 12V, but did not grind. I did go with the newer starter drive and it hits a lot softer.

Are you sure the ring gear is not mucked up?

Try the new starter drive! Much improved. Also the depth of engagement might be wrong. Ring gear not seated, or some other issue with depth. Jim
