Why is the rear blade hinged? It is hinged on some, but not others, where it is rigid. Speaking of the blade behind the box, not inside the box.
 
Material can build up between the two blades on a ridgit mounted rear blade forming a 6 or 8" surface. This prevents the front blade from cutting.A box blade with a hinged rear blade prvents this material buildup thus letting the front blade to cut. On a hindged box blade you constanttly have to hold the blade in a position or it will cut too deep.
 
Lets you use the whole weight of the box blade for
better digging. If you adjust it right, you can
control digging depth though.

I like the fixed blade, box blades better. You can rock the blade with the top link and control the depth of cut with the back of the back blade. So if you want to cut a 1/2 roll the blade so the back blades rear edge keeps the box form going any deeper.
