1 does a cb antennae need to be grounded?
2 do magnet mount antennae ground through the magnet?
3 can the coax cable do the grounding needed?

1) yes and no, 1/4-wave length (or equivalent) YES
2) generally yes, ...but... don't fergitt PAINT is an insulator
3) generally YES

"Depends!"

(Upon the type and make of antenna.)

At the least, likely a "ground plane" is needed, in other words, they don't work well if stuck to a little metal plate surrounded by fiberglass.

technically yes, but don't expect any major performance gains from doing it by the book.

Generally your ground will probably already be adequate to operate well enough - unless you always find yourself on the fringe, where a small tweak might make the difference between barely audible and completely unusable.

In most cases, the big performance gains would come from a bigger antenna and better antenna placement.

that just answered something thats been bugging me for over a decade, i took a pair of really good working antennas off a retired 359 peterbilt along with the radio out of it and installed them on a w900 kenworth, never could get them working as well as they did and never knew why

if you have a non metallic surface to mount on,a marine antenna has an internal ground plane...back when cb's were real popular i did alot of installs...marine antenna is what i used on Corvette's.

The vertical omnidirectional CB antenna is 1/4 wave. There is another 1/4 wave reflection from the earth giving you 1/2 wave and a low impedance feed point (75) ohms.....Keesler AFB, MS, Technical Training Center.
