Meyer Hay Conditioner

When I went to work for a farm machinery dealer in 1964 there were two Meyer hay conditioners on the back lot that had been there for several years. The story was that they had never been sold but demonstrated or leased several times. They were used after the hay was cut and covered one mower swath. I do not know if they performed poorly or the operators did not know how to use them. Does anybody know anything about them? were they a poor machine? I think we sold them for scrap.
 

According to an ad the Meyer was being sold in the fifties. The farmer that I worked for in the sixties had a Cunningham which tended to plug a lot. They became obsolete with the advent of the mower conditioner, but appear to be enjoying a revival now as a means of reducing drying time by substituting a "recon" pass for the first tedder pass. I know of two of these, the "Recon" and the "masticator". A friend has a Recon and swears by it. Old conditioners are being refurbed and used for this now.
 
In the late 50's a neighbor had a Meyer crusher on a
WD Allis with a mounted sickle mower. He conditioned
for my Dad a few times. Dad then bought a Cunningham
crimper. I used the crimper a lot and it didn't plug
in alfalfa. Dad demonstrated an IH crusher before he
bought the crimper and the IH plugged almost
everytime I got off the mower line. The crusher also
needed a lot more power to run it.
 
I used a hay conditioner (don't know what kind) in the early 60's- I'd mow 10 rounds or so, then go get the other tractor with the conditioner- and had almost non-stop clogging problems (grass would wind up around the steel drum). Turned out that if you stayed within a round of the mowing tractor, before cut grass got a chance to wilt (and get sticky), it worked great. Would have worked fine if conditioner had been behind the mower, but ours didn't have a PTO out the back of the mower to enable that. Sure helped with drying.
