Another Chevy OT ABS Control Module

While talkin Chevy, my 2000 Express 3500 Van, 454 Vortec, 4L80E OD AT, and Duals, is throwing either or BOTH the ABS Warning Light and the BRAKE warning Light. The brakes (good pedal, good strong smooth brakes and fluid etc) are all fine and the Cruise Control still works (I was surprised by that) so I guess I could put black tape over those lights lol........

Anywho my mechanic buddy has twice put his super expensive SNAP ON analyzer (NOT the $100 unit from Auto Zone) on and its indicating the ABS Module is bad, not just a cheap easy speed sensor fix grrrrrrrrrr The ABS Module has like 6 brake lines and the pump and 3 or 4 electrical connectors (all clean n tight and no crud) and everything all attached located underneath by the transmission.

Dern units are like $580 to $680 everyplace I look and I will likely hire it replaced because he tells me the bleeding process gets tricky and requires the diagnostic computer even before all is done and re set grrrrrrrrr

Any known baling wire and hammer fixes out there lol

These guys are really good at ABS and electronic module repair. I've used them in the past when I had my repair shop. http://www.autoxpresstech.com/home.html
As far as bleeding the brakes goes I have never had a problem gravity bleeding the systems when replacing the Abs module or lines. Remove the cover from the mater cylinder and fill it right to the top. open the farthest bleeder wide open, make sure it's clear, and go do something else for a while, when you see a steady drip coming out then close that bleeder and move to the next one. Keep the master cyl. full and you should be all set.
When you're done pump replace the m/c cover and pump the pedal slowly till you have a good pedal.
After it's pumped up go around one more time and bleed them to get out any remaining air bubbles. This method has never failed for me but you need to be patient. HTH, Jf

Often it's a relay in the control module that fails. If that is the case with yours, the module can be repaired or replaced, sometimes WITHOUT disturbing the pump/valve unit and brake lines (depending upon speciific vehicle).

GOOGLE "GM ABS Repair".

You can just pull the fuse. No ABS, but your brakes will work as normal. ABS light will stay on. There you can use your black tape.

THANK YOU Bob,

I have been to both the places you offered and the other one down below AND IM SOOOOOOO GOING TO CHECK THEM OUT. I just hate to spend $750 when it may be fixed for only a hundred or two grrrrrrrr

Mark, that is exactly what I did on my 2001 K3500 several years ago. No problems. Believe it or not, the truck will now stop on dry pavement MUCH faster than it did with the ABS functioning.

If the module itself is bad, it's possible to just change the module. If you get a used module, you will likely get the valve it's attached to also. It can be a little tricky to get the screws out sometimes without disconnecting the brake lines, but it's doable.

That company can rebuild 1 of the three Kelsey Hayes units used in my vehicle. Now I need to crawl under and see which one I have, my luck prob not the one of the 3 they can repair grrrrrrrr

In addition to just the module as Brian mentions, I have seen water get in the connector and set the light. In most cases the corrosion was so bad the terminal pins were almost corroded all the way through.

I assume that a 2000 Chevy Express would use a Kelsey Hayes 310 ABS module. Can't be fixed. The units that are being fixed are KH 325 units that are now having cold solder issues. They take them apart, fix the solders, and charge you alot of money. There is a small chance that you van uses the KH 325, but it's a very small chance.

Yep the web site I was given below indicates the 325 is repairable but NOT the 30 or 310 if I recall. I plan to figure out which I have tomorrow or Tuesday, my luck its NOT the repairable one so Im back to the $685 new one grrrrrrrrr
