Help : I have searched everywhere and can't find my truck keys[2002 Avalanche]. Is there any code on the vehicle that you can take to a Chevy dealer or locksmith and get a new key made. I hate to ride my Shcwinn sting ray to Physical Therapy tomorrow. Sunday and no dealers are open to call and ask about this. Thanks.

David is correct. You will need the vin # along with proof of ownership and the dealer can make one on the spot.

Call first before you go to get a key- they require a lot of documentation to get a key. Its a lot harder than it used to be - thief would just write down a VIN, get a key, and steal the car.

Yes and the Chevy dealer near me are all out of biz from imported cars taking over the lots,or empty buildings.

To late now but you should keep EXTRA KEYS for every thing. My son locked his keys in his truck twice.I took his keys and had copies made.1 buck each.I put his spares in a good place and showed my son and wife where they are. I keep a spare key in my pocket.Lost my keys to the old chevy once.Had a spare set on hand.Found the lost keys 2 years later in the garden. There is an electronic devise that can find lost keys.If you lose the transmitter ng.

GM dealer can retrieve the code with the VIN. Likely, they will charge you at least $10.00 to retrieve the code, then for labor to cut the key, plus for the key blank.

Ditto on the documentation. Bring the registration and your driver"s license with you in addition to the VIN#.
Here"s a little secret. They will want to get you to have it towed to the dealership and charge you to program the keys. You can do what"s called a "30 min learn". I can do it in 10 minutes by doing a theft deterrent learn with GM TIS2WEB at the dealership. You can do the same by cranking the engine for a second or two, waiting about 10 minutes for the security indicator to go out, and repeating the process 2 more times. On the 3rd try, the system will learn the key. Any other keys you just start the engine with the original key and as fast as you can switch keys and start the engine.

No relearned needed on an 02 for just a new key. That is only needed if you replace the lock case. Don't let anyone charge you for a relearn if replacing a key only on that truck.

Do like I do...Never remove the key. When in town, simply drop the key on the floor just under the seat out of sight. But then,WHY would anyone want to steal my old junker!

Due to the security features in the key, one for my '00 Expedition was $45 from the stealership, the remote would have been another $50 plus. Wife doesn't let me carry the remotes anymore! A friend showed me his Honda key, has the remote built into it, wonder what that would cost to replace.

I once lost my car key, in the barn one winter. I found it in the garden the next summer, after spreading manure and tilling it up. No kidding.

My 77 chevy still has a spare in a plastic box in the air cleaner.Out side the paper filter.I still carry two compasses in the woods. When I travel I keep a 38 in my pocket.

As long as you're looking for your key, keep an eye out for mine too. I know it was hanging on the key rack in the AM but was gone in the PM. Naturally it was the one with the clicker to unlock the doors electronically. First car I've ever owned with one of those! Pretty sure one of the kids dropped it some place and is too scared to admit it.
