Just finished replacing wiring harnesses, AC Line and turbo hoses on a customers Kubota M108X. Bird built a nest on top of engine and the rest is history. They were lucky, got it put out in time, didn't even scorch the paint on the hood.

My neighbor just lost a 25000 dollar JD backhoe
because of a birds nest.He was using it at the back of his farm and wasn't able to put the fire out by hand.

Wren nest caught fire on top of motor of my JD 1020 few years ago. Couldn't get to it to snuff it out. It burned out on its own without doing any real damage.

I had one on top of a riding mower engine. Was checking the oil before starting and found it.

Good point though. If you have a piece of equipment that sits for long periods best to check it out. I will.

Thanks,

Mark

I've had two bird nests this year on my MF35... I always raise my hood before I start it (I have to; I have a battery cut-off)...

Bird built nest on the exhaust manifold of a Farmall 140. Fire burned the paint on the hood but no other damage when it burned itself out. I was headed toward water all the time. Shutting off the engine after the flames started seemed to be the wrong thing to do. The moving air kept the heat from concentrating.
