It said to block the crankshaft and remove the bolt. How or what do you do to block the motor from turning and which direction do you turn the bolt? If it is a standard right hand bolt, it must be lefty loosey right?
Thank you
Steve

Will an impact wrench eliminate the need to block the crank from moving?

Easiest way to keep a small engine from turning when getting the large nuts loose or off is pull the spark plug and put some cotton string in the cylinder. Need to put enough in to keep the piston from going past tdc. Its a trial and error on how much to put in. I go by the thought more is better.

Reason for using cotton is you will not do any internal damage as it compresses.

Have used this method many times when rebuilding small engines.

They are talking about a stop plug. You screw out the spark plug and install this stop plug. It is just has a long piece that sticks into the cylinder so the piston top come to rest on it.

To take them off an impact will do it easily. They are common right hand thread. The are metric. I believe the bolt is a 10mm size and the head is 18 mm.

Where the stop should be used is on reinstalling the clutch. They should be torqued to so many foot lbs. There where problems with them falling off and breaking the bolt off in the crankshaft when an impact was used.

I made a set of stops out of old spark plugs. I just break out the porcelain and drill a 1/2 hole through the plug. The put a long 1/2 bolt through the old spark plug. I then braised the bolt in the old spark plug.

When using a stop you roll the engine against the stop by hand real slow. So it is solid against the piston.

The impact wrench did the job so easily that I don't think the engine rotated at all.
Thank you very much. I needed to remove the clutch to re-install two bolts into the front axle mount. I guess I have hit to many trees, with the edges of the tires, over the years and broke a weld.
