planting sweet sorghum

My mennonite neighbors here in KY have started using jd 7000 plateless planters. They are having trouble with the small sweet sorghum seed falling out of the fingers of the planter. Does anyone have a solution? Will bean meters work better?

Have never tried planting sweet sorghum with a finger type planter. I also live in Ky and plant sorghum, but only on a small scale so I use a push type garden seeder using a radish plate with every other opening taped over. It works pretty well if you are only seeding a small amount of cane. My cane is about 3 inches tall now. Joe

If you are talking about Haygrazer, sorghum/sudan which is sweet, used for hay, the common practice down here is a drill and 50#/acre. The setting on your drill is Milo which is about the same size seed but SS is not on the list pasted inside the drill cover. Rolling a packer behind the drill helps germination.

They are planting several acres of sweet sorghum or sorghum for molasses. The rate is about 3 pounds/ acre and have used old plate planters, but would like to use their 'new' 7000 jd plateless planters. They plant on 38" rows and 6-8" spacing.
