OT . 22 ammo

What is going on? Son has had his small flock of chickens wiped out by raccoons and was going to do battle. Went to Gander Mtn to pick up some .22 shells. Guy said they are all out. Might have some in Saginaw at a grand opening, but "get there early" WHAT???

Thats where it really hurts, besides whatever the h$ll embroiled this situation to what it is now, a person who may plink and or relies on .22 rim fire as a tool for varmint and pest control in an agricultural operation small or large, who used to periodically re-supply, myself included, are shut out currently, because they were not "preparing" for such a scenario, seemingly exacerbated by recent events, both criminal and political, with the results we see right now.

Is this some sort of indirect governmental obstruction of our 2nd amendment, or just a supply and demand thing with some "behind the scenes" or "walking the line" government influence on that, or solely just everyone now wanting to stock up at the same time as some apparent large order by a government agency ? Has to be something, just inconvenient, won't fire a round until deer season now, trap varmints, pests, but one does need a firearm for geese around here and .22's were fine all day long for that at what a 500 box used to cost. Ugly situation, you just hope it runs its course like the last one. Adapt and overcome, for now.

We were a country that tooled up for a massive undertaking in WWII, I find it hard to believe that some ingenious people could not figure out how to obtain raw material, manufacture same if necessary, tool up and manufacture productively in some sort of automation, ammunition to the exact same specifications of current but hard to find factory ammo.

I find the situation inconvenient, seem to have enough on hand for each caliber, but seems prudent to have a moratorium on their use, and just use alternate means when it comes to varmints and pests, and try not to sweat the ammo hoard trend going on.

We're starting to see some ammo on the shelves of the big box stores here in Houston. I'm not buying into the conspiracy theories. I think that it's a supply shortage due to increased demand. Here In Houston we have multiple new gun ranges that are busy all the time. The gun ban fear that never came to pass didn't help. All the folks that bought guns are buying ammo to shoot in them. The black rifle folks figured out that they are too expensive to shoot so started buying AR lookalikes in .22lr. Thus the shortage of .22lr ammo. Those guys will shoot a thousand at a time.

To be honest with everyone, I haven't figured out why .22 LR is so out of stock in the overall scheme of things. I've got a couple of 525 round boxes that I've had a while, bought them at about $25 per box before stuff got insane. After stuff got insane, was at one of them "loop hole" shows we hear so much about and a fella was selling them for $40 a box, had three boxes, but I said "Too much for .22 LR". Boy was I stupid. I'm not underestimating them, but they aren't those most potent rounds. Decades ago, one of my cousins was murdered by someone they never caught, using a .22, couple shots to the head, so I know what a .22 can do, but they are still .22 and still none to be found a half a year later? Things are nuts. So nuts that I'm paying $3.00 round for .500 mag 325 GR. In my area, I try to take in some auctions to pickup tractor parts, implements, and so one. I posted a link the other day of one. Well, same fella, Hahn does a lot of auctions and a whole lot of them can pickup firearms and ammo as well. Check out the Norton (deceased) estate auction over two days on the 28th and 29th in Nappanee, IN south of me. Over 8,000 rounds of .22 LR and a whole lot more available if you will be around.

Good luck all and leave me the 30.06 rounds.

I was into one of our local gun shops amd he had about 25 boxs of 50 rounds each of 22 cal. and it was a match grade. He also 223 and 5.56 but was out of the popular hand gun rounds.

I just finished replanting , my tomato , pepper, and cabbage plants, that the rabbits ate off. I didn't even know that a rabbit would eat tomatoes. till now. I got out the old remington fieldmaster 22 pump, and found out that I still had 25 rounds in a box of long rifles. Three rabbits later, I have 7 rounds left, and have been turned down at the local store, they have a limit of 2 boxes of ammo, but no 22's. I cannot see the far sight with my new bifocal glasses, and the 3 that I have eleminated, so far have been very patient with me, and hung around just too long, till I got lucky. I personally need a pickup load of 22's

Duhh! It never dawned on me to mount a scope! probably because of the close distances, of my targets. I am used to using iron sights, most of my life, and now see 2 front sights when sighting down a barrel. Do you use your glasses when using a scope?, or do you go without, to make shots? Thanks for the help!

You are behind the times. .22 shells have been almost impossible to buy for better than 6 months.

They are starting to become a little more plentiful./ At least till the next mass shooting then it will start all over again.

My local gun shop is getting 80,000 rounds a week and still selling out.

I got 4 boxes of 50 last time I was there. Didnt' even ask the price.

friend of mine bought a box of 50 for $7.00,...save your money on ammo and buy a good box trap and a can of jack mackrel....he'll catch every coon around....

I still don't have to wear glasses except for reading and close work but I too was having trouble focusing on the rear sight, front sight and target at the same time.
Putting a scope on my deer rifle put me back in the game.
I still have a bit of trouble finding my way into the scope and couldn't make a snap shot like I used to with iron sights but heck, I usually missed those shots anyway.

Find a 22 with a peep sight.Makes a big difference.Never get your ammo supply get low, you could have bought a 525 carton for 10 bucks a few years ago.You can buy an air rifle with a 177 and 22 barrel, scope included for 125 bucks.Walmart has them.

I can tell you where all the .22 ammo is - stored up by two separate groups:

1. The group that maintains a hefty stock of all the the different types of ammo they use (and they have endeavored to increase their stock during "stressed" political times).

2. The group that profiteers during any type of shortage, whether it be ammo or other hard-to-find items. They buy up any and all stock they can find and then place it on gunbroker for sale at exhorbitant prices.

There is a third group that actually uses the .22 ammo in fairly large quantities because they do a lot of target shooting and will switch to .22 when the more expensive calibers get too expensive to shoot in quantity during shortages and spiked prices. While this group does contribute to the shortage, they are no where near being the factor that the first two groups are.

Ralp I shoot with my glasses on and its more enjoyable when you can see what your doing. For most large critters at real close range I use .410 with no 4s or no 5 shot and for the small critters like ground squirrels I use no6 and 71/2 shot and with the .410 you don't have to be dead on to hit them.

Ralphwd45, you can adjust the eyepiece on most scopes either to your eye or to your glasses, but of course, not both unless you don't have much correction. I use 2.75 readers for anything up close, leave them off working outside usually, so my scopes are adjusted to use without glasses; your choice. Low powered scopes 1x, 2x, are much easier to find your target in, but still give you the optical correction that takes the fuzzy out. A fixed power scope in any price range is much more durable and usually brighter than a similar variable scope. Variable scopes are handy to use as a spotter and to shoot with but more fragile. Break barrel pellet guns (springers) are hard on any scope, must be extra HD to absorb recoil in both directions and need the best scope rings you can find to survive very long. I have ruined 3 scopes on break barrel pellet rifles (never ruined one yet on light weight .308 or 30-06's.) Good luck.

Some might call me a "hoarder" as I have about 50,000 rounds of .22LR ammo. But last week my father, brother, and a friend came over to visit and we went out to my sand pit and did some plinking and went through 1,500 rounds in just a few hours. We do that every few weeks so the supply gets knocked down rather quickly.

While .22lr is harder to come by, if you hunt around it is available for close to the same prices as before all the "gun ban" hype began.

Theres a forth group that are sharp enough to buy supplies when they have a little extra money.I have bar and chain oil I bought for 2.38 a gallon. My powder and primers were bought before the rip off hazardous fee came into use.Never buy anything during shortages.

Thursday, June 6, 2013:
Cabellas..only birdshot
Gander Mountain..two 525 box limit
Blains Farm-Fleet..Four 525 box limit, plenty in
stock..hoarders were taking 4 to their car, and
coming back in for 4 more!

Yep finding any ammo is hit and miss now days. Go to one store and they have this and that but not what you want then go at another one and what they have is not the same as the first one. Guess I am lucky we have at least 7 stores close by that sell ammo and can almost always find what you want.

Get some traps. It dont matter if the .22 shells are free, you wont be near as sucessful as you will be with traps.

I wear my eye glasses when using a scope. It is the most convienient for me and someone else can use the gun without adjusting the scope.

My only luck had was to stop by the gun store every time I drive by. About once every two or three weeks I am able to pick up a couple of 50 round boxes for $7.99 a box.

I got tired of it about a month ago and just forgot about shooting season for this year.

Interesting. I learned one thing. When bracing for a shot, brace on the stock, not the barrel. It messes up the alignment with the scope.

This has been on the internet for 6 months. One thing will fix this mess.STOP BUYING AMMO.Those who are buying for profit will have to unload and you can name the price. This should a fair warning to those who only keep a box or two of 22lr or any other caliber on hand.Dosent matter what caused the shortage, its here.Food could be next.I go into winter with a shed full of firewood and plenty of potatoes in the cellar, onions and winter squash. Some home canned stuff and a good supply of things I need.If you shoot center fire cartridges you should hand load.

My remark had to do with a break barrel pellet rifle. How do you
have a free floating barrel in a gun? Never heard of such, but I'm
not in the shooting social circles.

"Free floating" just refers to the barrel not having any contact with the barrel channel of the stock.
