How to engage clutch on old tractor

I figured I might ask from a more general point. I am have issues with a Case 1170 wanting to get in a jerking or shaking when engaging. Sometimes it won't, sometimes it will. It is less severe if I just get it on and engage but that is not always possible if used as a hay tractor.

I am curious if there are some general dos and don'ts on older clutch tractors? rpms low, fast engage, etc? I have plenty of seat time on an M&M with hand clutch and smaller 3pt tractors and don't remember ever experiencing shaking but I understand there could be issues with the solid clutch pedal linkage with rubber mounted cab. I really hope that is all it is but I tend to doubt it.

Chattering is the term. The solution is one of three choices.

Live with it

Use it fairly hard by taking off in Road gear a number of times (maybe 5) with about 5 to 10 minutes between each take off. this can heat off contamination and is sometimes effective. (if one treatment does not fix it, don't keep doing it)

Replace it and reface the Flywheel as well.

Glazing of the surfaces, Nis adjusted fingers, Weal cushion springs in the hub or between friction surfaces, or heat checking and hard spots in a worn flywheel can make them chatter.

Best of luck, the issue is precise safe movement when doing hitching, or careful positioning. Jim

from your other post my guess is it is not the clutch its self, either the rubber iso mounts are bad and or you have broken iso mounts, pull the floor cover and look undre the floor board, I had to repair one of my early 970's with this issue, mine was so bad I had to pull the fuel tank as well to get to the problem

If you are pretty sure there is not a problem of oil on the clutch..

You can give the clutch a abundant shot of powdered Graphite (engine off, clutch held in dis-engaged position).
Works wonders on my JD 520..I apply graphite about twice a year, if it gets to grabbing..

Will not hurt anything to try it..

Ron..
