2-4-D and corn

My corn is around 4-6" tall. Lambs quarter and other weeds are just starting to sprout. Can I use a weak batch of 2-4-D and kill the weeds but not hurt the corn? Otherwise I'll run the tiller between the rows. This is field corn in a food plot.

It will stunt the corn, wilt the plant, and slow the growth for a few days. It will usually come back though. Its better to use drop nossels and not hit the leafs on the corn. It doesn't bother the corn if you just hit the stalk and not the leafs of the plant. I use it on Indian and sweet corn. I hand spray it when it gets about knee high and just hit the bottom of the stalk.

2-4-d is all that was available years ago for corn. your corn is about the ideal size to spray it with 24d. the only time corn is hurt with 2-4-d when it is taller it will make the stalks brittle for short time.

I don't know. Last time I used it at that stage,the stalks turned to rubber and it layed right down. Looked dead as a doornail for a few days.

Most broadleaf weeds are not tolerant of Atrazine on their leaves. If you didnt already put some down, you may wanna broadcast a couple quarts of atraine. It'll take care of the broadleaf weeds and prevent future broadleaf weeds.

Is this corn not Roudup ready? If so use roundup and atrazine. It'll clean it right up.

There are other chemicals safer than 2-4D for your corn. They may be more expensive but if you have some big farmer friends they might sell you a few ounces. A few that come to mind are Callisto, Status, and Laudis. When mixed with a few drops of crop oil and atrazine they are pretty impressive.

Cowman;

LOL!! Yeah, I've eaten lambs quarter. Cook it like spinach.

No it is not RR. RR is a little steep to just feed the critters.

I used to use Banvel and 2-4D at about that height-2"-4" or 6 leaf. Any taller than that and the corn will flop over and lay on the ground for a few days. When it picks itself back up it might goose neck a little. I found out the hard way. We haven't done that for 25 years now that we have pre-plant herbicides. 40 years ago we would wait till the corn was in the 24" range and spray with 6 oz. 2-4D using drops to keep the spray out of the whorl of the plant. The corn was brittle for a week afterward and could snap off in a high wind. I did have a few plants pop off in a high wind once but I never saw the nightmare fields farmers talked about where the whole field snapped off. Before dad started spraying he made my sis and I walk the corn to pull weeds. We walked every acre of that hot steamy jungle in July and August. So those are your choices for broadleaf control. Jim

Used to the normal treatment, now I hear some corn doesn't like it.

Spray it by the 5th leaf, after that the growing point might be coming out, and you will hurt the corn if 2,4D gets into the growing point.

As the corn grows taller, you can use drop tips and spray with 2,4D again, as long at the spray doesn't get into the top whorl.

There are so e really good dicomba products now with safe hers, that will work on taller corn, and work on the broad leaves a little better.

The 2,4D can make the corn a bit woozy, and brittle, if you should get bad weather, strong wind within a few days after spraying, could give you lodged corn. If you spray too strong, also.

But what you say should work. Just offering the thinking and possibilities behind it.....
