RE: Att. Central NY . YT Friends

Hello all.

My wife and I were looking at the post about the show at Sharon Springs.

We would love to see some more New York YTers and are considering making the drive from waaay upstate to the show.

Are there any places that we might meet up? Also interested in who might be going and what days.

Brad Buchanan

Hey Brendon.

We are in Malone, about 2 hours East of you. My shop is 12 miles north of Malone in Trout River and I can toss a baseball into Quebec from there.

We do a bit of boating and fishing in the St. Lawrence.

Brad

That' s cool I've been to Malone a couple times what kind of shop do you run? I'm about a mile from the St. Lawerence. I run a small hay farm down here and collect a few tractors. Mostly Masseys but I have some John Deeres, a ford, A farmall , and one old Oliver. I saw the post for Sharon Springs, I think I was there with a freind racing snowmobiles once, but I don't think I'll be going. Hopfully the weather will be better and I'll be haying.

Brad, and Brendon,
I made the post, and located about 12 miles from the Sharon Springs show. I am also about 13 miles north of Cooperstown NY, (baseball thing) and Sharon is about a half hour from Howe Caverns, and there are lots of interesting sights along the historic Erie Canal which is adjacent to us. There are many motels in the area and eateries, such as Saltsman's Hotel which was an 1800's roadhouse, and continues to be the best place here to enjoy seasonal delacies and great food.
You can google all the sites, to make a decision. My e-mail is open, and would be glad to show you around, if you decide to travel down here.
Loren, the Acg.

I live in Ontario but might be going to visit my son
who lives at Charlton, about a half hour from
Sharon Springs. If we go I'll be there on the Sunday.
Chas.

Brendon, I'm just across the lake in Macomb. I imagine I know most of your family.

Brad, I was just up in Malone a couple weeks back. Wife bought a herd of goats from a lady on the Wheeler Rd. Spent a lot of time in Malone back in the day. Sure has changed.

How is Malone these days? I spent 16 months there on the upstate correctional facility working for OGS as a project manager on the construction management team for that job. I used to work with an OGS guy who was a super on the job, Mark Macdougall, he was from over your way, Ogdensburg/Canton if I recall, we had some locals from east and west out 11 and or 37 in our site office, depressing job, 750 S.H.U. cells, never did like the view from any of them LOL ! The support buildings and tunnel was a little more interesting, they sure got a nice kitchen and gym though !

Hey Bret.

Kinda funny, I was just at that same farm a few months ago lookin' at goats. Interesting how paths cross sometimes.

Malone has changed a pile in the last 20 years. Lots more money here than before and it is losing a bit of the small town appeal.

Brad

Hey Billy.

Malone is getting real modern!! They used to say Malone was stuck in the 50's but now I think we have jumped the 60's and went right into the groovy 70's.

I know a lot of OGS guys but I am not sure if I met Mark. They have shrunk a lot over the years.. They used to truck food, supplies and the like but most of that is now done by outside vendors.

Me and my boys watched the watertower go up for Upstate (I was a supervisor in Bare Hill) with great interest however I never set foot in the place.

An interesting note on that project was when the pipeline was laid between the two some kind of snafu happened by either the village or a contractor and personally I had green grass pieces coming out of my bathreeom sink for a few days. Pipe not flushed or something they say.

Brad

Hey Loren.

Thanks for the reply and if we head down I will send an e-mail and perhaps we could meet. My wife and I have enjoyed your posts.

Brad

Hey Brendon.

I ran a sign business for 25 years and am semi-retired.

I built my shop large enough to put a tractor-trailer combo inside for lettering and now I have the place paid off and can fiddle with old tractors, woodworking or whatever I like there.

Good luck on the haying,

Brad

Malone certainly has changed! Lots more money yes, and lots more wellfare and lots more crime too.Lots less farms. But car dealers and retailers are loveing it. The school system and county have gone crazy on taxes. I was born in Malone and grew up 3 miles south of the village.
Today I live where I was raised. Moved back here after 35 years of being away (4 yrs. military and 30 yrs. working on Long Island.) Love the area but can take or leave the village.

Well, I can assure you the goats are in a lot better shape already than they were. People get in over their heads sometimes.

Thats funny, sort of a small world, Mark was with Design and Construction, field orientated, this project was probably convenient given the location, and where he was from, he probably worked on most of the northern facilities or within the regions up there.

Bare Hill, and or Bare Hill road, I was there for the water tower erecting, you know when they painted it in October of '98, the ladybugs came out, it was a nice sunny and warm October day, seems like all of them stuck to that paint ! I think I have an aerial photo of all the tank pieces staged around the base.

Must have been a water main with debris in the line or sections before they charged it up, sanitized then flushed.

I recall another pipeline, the force sewer main, between Upstate, and the other facility, (there were 2 others besides the newest and 3rd one) I forget which is which, both were medium security, if I recall. The force main went between the east facility, east side of bare hill road, and upstate. I inspected every manhole and closed 2 valves on each end to safeguard against an accidental backfeed on the upstate CF end until we were ready to commission the new system on our end. The site contractor was from right here in town where I live here outside of Troy top notch outfit too, they did an excellent job and afforded us a month of float time as they completed their work rapidly throughout the entire project. I had to sign off on their work, and part of it was inspecting every single manhole, 175 of those + another 12 or so on the force main, I've been in every single one, the laborer from the site contractor was with me ready to address any punch list items and he was in one of those force main manholes with no ventilation like from a gravity system, open pipe, he almost blacked out, I had grabbed his hand and forearm and helped him get out, confined space, he recognized the danger soon enough thankfully, but they should have had safety equipment for both of us.

There was not a heck of a lot of things to do around there, we used to go to "The Pines" for lunch, and other local places, tried a little bowling, but there was so much cigarette smoke I ended up with nosebleeds and some of the worst sinus problems I've ever had. Once in awhile guys from the team would go to Montreal, or the new casino nearby, or to a gym near the reservation. I used to like stopping in at the lake titus brewery down 30 a ways and the Tamarack Inn which I think burned down. There was a small ski slope nearby we used to ski there midweek when the snow was good.
