I need to replace one sleeve in a 4.236 in a 84 JCB backhoe. I have the head off and piston out. The Perkins engine manual would have you strip block and press sleeve out.I would like to replace the bad sleeve and piston without removing engine from backhoe. Would like hear any ideas. Thanks for all answers.

not familiar with the perkins, but i have welded a bead quickly 180 degree's apart from top to btm and just pulled them out with my fist on dry sleeves.

I go with rustred...weld a few quick spatters from bottom of the sleeve to the top, I try to do 3 runs and a few short runs in between at the top. turn the welder well down and move quite fast. You are not looking a strong weld just to get heat in there ....fast.. Give the bore a few turns of a hone to remove the carbon and dirt, oil up your new liner and fit it in.

ditto on welding up the length of sleeve-just be sure to move fast, low setting, or you can burn into the block--don't ask me how I know]
