OT: Anyway to get DVDs to stop skipping???

We have a whole bunch of DVDs that have kid shows on them. Over the years usage and handling by the kids/grand kids, they had scratches in the back side. Not deep scratches on the back just little ones you can see if you hold them up to a light.

Is there anything that can be done to get them to play and not stick/pause??? The younger kids really like the Loony Tunes DVDs but they are the oldest and in the worse shape.

The new ones I have found are not cheap. They usually are not in the bargain bins. I am not going to give $15-20 for the old cartoon DVDs.

I know not really tractor related but keeping the young ones busy on rainy days allows me to get some work done. Actually I will confess to watching them with the kids every now and then. LOL

You can get a kit called a cd doctor. Its a wheel with a very fine polishing compound on it. You wet the disc an then turn the handle. They work pretty well on light scratches and finger prints. Good luck Jeff

I have a friend who swears that spraying an old record or a disc with wd40 will improve the clarity..I've never done it but he does it all the time..cheap way to try it

JD,

I don't know about the scratches, but my grandchildren constantly get finger prints and peanut butter on their DVDs.

I clean them with Windex and a lint-free cotton cloth. It usually improves or fixes them.

I like the old VCR tapes. They took alot more abuse and keep working. Even if they got unwound and tangled you could rewind them in by hand and many times they worked.

JD Seller, tech at last job said use toothpaste and water and a soft cloth in a moderate manner following grooves to "sometimes" improve scratched CD performance. Sounds similar to NYMaple's response. Good luck with it.

If you're cleaning a CD or DVD you should use radial motions, not circular. Center to the outside, not around the disc following the grooves. Radial scratches, even bad ones, usually don't cause problems...

I had the same problem. Was told to wash with dish washing liquid, soft cloth, rinse well and pat dry. Worked for me. Worth a try.

There is a video rental place near me that advertises on the radio that they have a process where they can repair scratched dvds. I don't know anything about it but you might check with an independent rental place.

JD,

Go to Walmart and get this product . I have an older version of it and it fixes scratches as well as cleans the disk . Works on slight to moderate scratches . Another company also makes an electric version for double the money .

(quoted from post at 09:22:01 06/05/13) DVDs had scratches in the back side. Not deep scratches on the back just little ones you can see if you hold them up to a light.

LOL
hich side do you consider the "back side"? If you're referring to the printed (label) side and you can see light through them you're sunk. If the "back side" is the mirrored side you can try Pledge furniture polish to fill in the voids. Always us a soft lint free cloth or microfiber and wipe from the center outward. Do not wipe in a circular motion. If you have a "Family Video" store nearby they will polish them for free.

The opening was too big in the VCR. Once when me kids were little, I found a peanut butter and jelly sandwich pushed in there.

Exact same thing happened here. I took it to a dvd place that polished it and they said it will either fix it or it won't. It happened to work and only cost $3. I can't say what they did because they took it to another room and I heard a machine running but like I said it happened to work.

Hello Jd Seller,

I used kitchen dish soap and a lot of elbow grease with some success. Deep scratches is the end, but a second time cleaning fix the majority of them
