Purchasing ex-military construction equipment?

Anybody know the procedure for purchasing ex-military construction equipment? There are a couple of John Deere 410 loader/backhoes on fleabay right now. I don't want to discredit the seller, he is running a business but us regular citizens should have the opportunity to purchase equipment.

Hours and prices (vs. new) are remarkably low, I know Financial Institutions will not loan on older construction equipment, they have been burnt too many times. This tends to kill the price of construction equipment much over 3-5 years old.

Rule of thumb around here on used farm equipment is take the price you pay and double it to put the machine in operating condition.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks,

Bill.

One site where you can bid and purchase is from
govliquidation.com. You can search by state, type of equipment, etc. There may be others.

i've bought an em military road grader before. green paint an all. ran great.. later traded it on another piece of equipment.

Another place you can bid on ex-military construction equipment is www.gsaauctions.gov
They usually have a lot of equipment--Just depends how far you want to travel to get it.

Twenty or so years ago part of my job was evaluating equipment for DRMO, "Defense Reutilization Marketing Office".
The usual progression was the regular military, handed down to National Guard units, state and local municipalities, and a few to eligible non profits.
The stuff on the open markets is well used, known defects are pretty well recorded. like any auction, hands on inspection is a real good idea, some are pretty decent, some are real pieces of junk.
Some of this equipment may set for several years before being sold and may have been cannibalized for parts after the fact.
We were shipping new trailer mounted welders to the Gulf and ended up stealing a lot of vices and cable sets from the old ones in order to complete a new machine.

Any body can buy used military equipment, you just need to know where to look. If you do buy something be prepared to play by the rules.

Construction equipment sells good no matter what age if it is good. Most of that cheaper stuff you see is junk,or wore out.You can find 20 year old backhoes that are in better shape than some of that government stuff 5 years old.I go to government auctions and there's nothing cheap there.
