Camshaft Positioning Sensor

Daughter's 98 Ford Escort has check engine light on. Advance Auto pulled the code and told her the sensor was bad. How involved is it to replace said sensor?

Look around the engine block in the camshaft area. If you find it you will see.

It is in the driver's side of the head. Are you sure it is bad? I have never seen on go bad on an Escort. I would make sure the timing belt has not jumped a tooth, that will also cause your code and is more likely. That engine has clearance to run out of time or break the belt and spin down without damage.

new timing belt and pulley replaced less then 5k miles ago.

I would still check the timing. Just had the same scenario on a 2.5 Ranger. Multiple A-zone cam sensors later, it came to me to find out the cause. The customer said it did not always set the cam code right away.

ON IH engines if the cam or crankshaft sensor goes bad the engine won't run.

The IH 7.3 diesel was known for that. It was quick and easy to change. I kept a spare along with a combination wrench for it in the glove box.
