Have a couple ton of 17-10-30 dry started left from corn. Would it be okk to put a little down with the beans? I have low rate fert augers so could get a low rate. Any opinions? Thought I would use one ground that had corn stalks baled off of and will be no tilling the beans in.

we always did it with liquid starter till we quit using it. they had us fill tanks 25% full and finish filling with water. we now have quit using starter and now broadcast 11-52 in the fall!

In a late season like this one using some starter on soybeans could make a big difference. Soybeans will produce their own nitrogen when they get bigger but until then they use what is available in the soil. I have seen yield data that shows 5-8 bushels of yield response in the right year. Other years when fertility is not a limiting issue there is very little yield response. This year that early rapid growth may make a huge difference.

Truthfully if I was planting soybeans in marginal soils and it got late. I would use starter fertilizer on them.

You may need every advantage you can get if this cool weather keeps up all summer. Early fall/frosts could be a real possibility this year.

Friend of mine sells seed and fert and chemicals, about 15 years ago he figured out that 9-23-30 was cheaper than 3-18-36 (witch is standard around here for soybeans) and got me to using it. He swares by it and I can see a difference in beans when them come up and take off growing that I grow. That extra nitrogen will help the beans take off in a hurry. Take some pictures of them when they come up and ware you didn't use it in the field a couple times in the year and you will be amazed at what you see. Then you can post them this fall after you cut them and tell us how they did. Would be a interesting post to do. Go for it. Bandit

A low rate is OK. Beans are more sensitive to the salt in dry fertilizer, believe it hurts germination. Liquid fertilizer is better.
