Got me a David Brown

Hello,

To work on there is! My neighbor just bought this tractor. Lots of rust and the dash is complete but nothing is working. Does anybody out there have a wiring diagram for the beast? It is a 4 Cyl. diesel and runs just fine with excellent rubber. Fluids are in need of change, but it sounds real sweet running. We just wired the ignition to get it started, but the wiring is all there, hanging on the frame! Thanks in advance.

I bought a new 990 1974 from a case dealer

I bought a new 990 in 1974 right after case started selling them. One of the best tractors I ever had, built stout and easy handling with lots of good features like the ground speed P.T.O. feature which saves alot of fuel when using light power required equiptment.
Draft sensing 3pt.was very good along with the lock-up which prevented accidental dropping while working under a implement.

Just visited a yard here in NI yesterday with about 50 of them parted out, if you need something you cannot find your side of the water then let me know.....email open.

From the looks of it, you are going to need a fuel and temperature gauge. When unplugged they should go to the left, not right. Don't waste your time on the Indian Gauges for sale on eBay and elsewhere, the resistance values are all wrong. Sparex has good ones.

Is that a 4/47 or 4/49 engine? Should be stamped by the generator, or photo of the left side on the engine will tell.

Otherwise a nice straight tractor, Get some paint on that tin before it rots away. Approximately a 1972 based on the decals(known as "Bottle Opener" decals, only used for a short period of time).

There are some Original Case/DB wiring diagrams/wiring manual floating around the web. You will need them, Lucas isn't known as "the Prince of Darkness" for nothing.

Hi
Not a bad looking tractor for it"s age.
Hopefully the rear end oil is not full of water the hyds on them browns are not a fan of water in the system. There are some valves in there that can stick the odd time or two. and have to be removed and cleaned if your unlucky.
Make sure you do the hyd filter underneath as well if it"s the same as the later ones.
They also have dry brakes on to.
I think there should be weep holes in the under side of the rear axle castings where the brakes are, make sure they are open, and oil doesn"t leak out, as the linings get messed up if the seals or bearings go bad.
Good luck with it.
Regards Robert

Hello RGMartin,

The gauges are toast, we need the temperature gauge to work right now so he can use it. Tack drive cable is bad at the engine end. It is a very well built unit. Ones the fluids are replaced, and the temporary temp gauge it installed, he will use it. The reason for the tractor is to pull a 500 gallon tank. It has 45 or 47 draw bar horse power. I'll take some pictures when I get a chance.
Lucas is really a pain to work with. Might be easier to start from scratch!

Bingo. Delco alternator, new gauges from the auto parts store(capillary temperature), new wiring... Not hard to do.

Agree 100%. The Lucas system is fine when it's working, once it's got some age on it....not so much. Better to plumo in a mechanical oil press gauge, temp gauge, Delco alt. Run your wiring the American way, it just makes more sense.

The 990 is about 54hp. Great tractor IMO.
