i have a 2004 honda four trax rancher AT. it has the multi
function electronic display which shows what gear you are in.
when i shift the gearshift into D the display does not show the D
symbol like it should but will show neutral and reverse. also it
will go into 1st gear but will not shift up, its just stuck in low. it
has a electronic or manual shift feature, using either one does
not correct the problem. manual says to take it to a honda
dealer, i"m miles from the nearest honda dealer so would like to
correct this myself. since almost every farm these days has a
quad i thought this site would be a good place to start.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can try to pull the trouble codes, here is a link on how to do that, click the pictures in the first post.

If you get no trouble code, I would go after the gear shifter sensor or it's wiring. Other sensors and motor problems normally present themselves much differently.

There is a good online forum for Honda ATVs. Google honda atv forums and you can access a lot of knowledgeable people, plus you can download the service manual free from that site.
Good Luck,

Get the foot shift lever out of the tool kit and use that to het out of low. Then refer to your manual about resetting the electric shift. It's been a while but it is something like ignition off, shift button , ig on downshift. Some pattern of switching.

A rancher 400 AT doesn't have a backup foot shifter as they are based on the Hondamatic and not on a manual transmission.
