well, now I know why po sold the bush hog dm 80 at consignment auction ,, the leading edge under skid plate , broke a ear off ,,, all pieces are there ,,and a welder has confidence his weld will hold the cast steel ,,, trouble is the hex shaft broke in same location from streessof running at mild angle,, it is tempered tool steel ,and all havedoubts that it will weld and last ,steel man tells me we coulduse 40/41 ,3/4 temperedmachine steel ,,for 85 as opposed to 250 plus from bush hog dealer.. not sure what to do and you guys mite help with your thoughts ..

Check that shaft out real close. They are usually metric not English dimensions. I thought they where 18 MM which is .708 inches.

Not familar with that mower. Does it have individual segments like a Vermeer? If so, buy a new segment. If it is a gearbed mower with a one piece cutter bar, maybe it could be cut at the weld, lined up, and rewelded. Buying a complete new cutterbar is like buying a new mower.

If you can get 4140 hex, that probably would work. We use it quite a bit at work and it's a very tough steel. I am curious what checking they did to determine it's a tempered tool steel.

I would've just assumed it was 1018 cold rolled hex.

Thanx Don ,,,he has a machine that cheks it , it is beyond me ,, also when he saw how the hex shaft was splintered and broken ,, kinda like wood , it clued him to what kind of steel it was
