History, buffalo tornados

The thought occurred, huge herds of buffalo were around on the plains (tornado alley) for centuries. If the herd was "miles long" there must have been occasions when a tornado intercepted a herd. Imagine the carnage that would be.
 
So do you think back then, was there was alot of 2x4s and tin blowing around? The buffalo were not in pens or fenced in they could move around as they wanted. lightning probably killed more buffalo then anything else.
