Speaking of Ford diesel 7.3s

My brother has a early model 99 7.3, I have a 2000, he said his truck could never take off empty like my truck could loaded., so this winter he bought a beans diesel chip, or something. They build it for the computer in your truck. He said it really woke the 7.3 up, supposed to get better fuel mileage too! I don't know if ill get one or not but My question is does doing that have any effect on the engine as far as longevity goes. They usta say any performance gain is a reliability loss. Just wanted to see any opinions on using that type of thing. He did alot of research and this company seemed to be pretty good he thought.

I have the same truck and chip. As long as it dosen't have a dirty tune for the chip its just fine. I've had mine in 2 different trucks grossing 34,000 for over 3yrs now and NEVER had a problem. I also told them when I bought it I work my truck like a mule! GAUGES are a MUST even if its only a pyro gauge for the exhaust temps. I drive by the pyro no more than 1400 deg before turbo temp!

Hi
If his truck is an early 99 is it a superduty like mine that has 98 build date and sold 99. The early 7.3 had a smaller turbo fitted. That's why it never went as good as yours. Mines been chipped and has 500.000 kms on it. The guy I got it from beat the c@#p out of it, and never serviced it.
It still starts good has a little blow by and takes of sideways like a striped ape if you tramp on the pedal.
From what I hear as long as you drive like you own it not stole it 7.3 are good with a chip if serviced right. Guys seem to think with mines service history, it might not make the million without a re build.
If you had the 6.0 they say they are terrible reliability stock and chipping those and driving it like you own it can be bad news.
Those of us guys with 7.3 have a generally very reliable truck motor compared to the newer ones.

if I understand them right, a chip (or tune) just "tricks" the computer into dumping more fuel into the engine.

Probably would give you more power but you can also imagine what else it will give you.

I'm sure you will hear lots of stories about guys who have ran tunes for hundreds of thousands of miles.

Yes he had a pyro gauge, tranny temp gauge and 2 others I think. He said the tuner has a drag setting, stock, and a few others I forgot. Thinks for the info.

When they bump up the power the pyro gauge is probably the most important option. That and the driver needs to pay attention to it when he's using that extra power.

ive got an 02 and i have ran a programmer on it for the last 6 years on the same setting. only problem i am running into now is my HPOP seems to be getting weak and not putting out anymore power over 3/4 throttle. i have an AFE intake and 4 inch MBRP stainless exhaust. really seemed to wake that old girl up. better mileage too
installed a 3 gauge pillar pod. will agree with others about adding fuel, a pyro guage is a must. another add-on that will help is a programmer called a turbo saver. it will idle your engine until the EGT gets down to 350 and then shuts it off. you can be inside a store with your keys in your pocket while its cooling down

ive put 151K on it so i have kept track of the number over the years
