Rhubarb Crum Pies

My wife made two rhubarb crumb pies from the rhubarb in our garden for our daughter's 59th birthday this coming Sunday. She was born at Ft Bragg NC while I was in the Army. She's a nurse practitioner and has her own home and never married. We're having prime rib roast, sweet corn, scalloped potatoes and salad. Plus rhubarb pie for dessert. Hal

never liked rhubarb, but those look so good I would definetly would try some, tell her happy birthday from all to crazies on YT

El Toro,

Looks really good (never had one - reminds me of Dutch Apple pie in looks).

Have fun with your daughter tomorrow.

Great looking pies. I remember the crumb top, and also some with no top crust at all, but never with a regular top crust. Not sure why- probably tradition.

Never had rhubarb crumb pies, but I'm sure I would like them. Mom always made rhubarb custard pies. She taught the wife how to make them so in a sense I'm still getting Mom's pies.

I wish you could see how big the heads of the stalks are. I put cow manure on them when they were just peeking through the ground. I don't think it will hurt the flavor of the pies. Hal

El Toro,

I grew up on rhubarb in Northeastern Ohio. I've tried to grow it at various places that I've lived in the South, but never had much success.

Wish I knew what I was doing wrong.

Happy Birthday to your daughter.

You need freezing cold weather for rhubarb. I'm in ne MD near the PA and Delaware borders. My wife's grandparents and parents were from German heritage and they grew rhubarb in PA. Her grandparents came to this country in the late 1800's and farmed for a living. They grew and canned everything. They even made sauerkraut. We went to school together and she never told anyone that she was part German during WW2. Hal

Tom, plant them along the north side of a house or barn where they will get very little if any direct sunlight. They do not like direct sunlight in the south. They like some manure mixed into the soil, and they need a lot of watering in the summer. I"ve got a whole row along my shop and they"re doing great. It will be picking time in 2 weeks.

And if you drive an old tractor past them once in awhile, they seem to grow better.
