my daughter has it, hated it until she talked with two different tech support groups - now she really likes it.

I listen to a computer show on the radio on the weekends (Leo LaPort). He thinks it's awful too. He says XP was the ultimate format it's been down hill ever since.

Windows 8 is JUNK !!! We bought a new ' puter for the office with it on from Staples. It had a 15 satisfaction warrenty on it....went back at 14 days !! At first I thought it was me. Then my oldest daughter visited for a weekend. She works with PC's and apples everyday and she does programming. She said 8 was poorly written and had 'dead ends'. what ever that means. The next day we returned it back to Staples, took our money to a different computer store that will put Win 7 professional on new computers. This retailer said that win 8 only works well on touch screen computers
I agree, I really liked XP. Win 7 pro is MUCH better than 8.

I have a Window 8 laptop, I drove 54 miles Best Buy to ask "do you have any Windows 7 computers?" they said sure and handed me a computer. I paid for it and drove home, when I opened it up it was a Windows 8. I called Best Buy corporate to complain seems they have a corporate policy not to be responsible for their employees and wouldn't do anything. I slimed them on the customer survey, the store manager calls me, the questions and statements he makes confirmed it's Best Buys policy not to be responsible for their employees even when they lie. Told him they should really have the boxes of the computers marked better, he said it's not their fault the manufacturer makes that decision, I pointed out the manufacturer makes specific models only for them so they have a wiggle out on the price guarantee and that they're big enough that any manufacture will do what they want to get their product in Best Buy. After about three more lies he stated " bring it back in I'll make it right", I asked if he'd reimburse me for the round trip mileage, he says he can't do that, I asked him to define "right", he states he "Can't do that". He then comes out with the grand daddy of corporate double talk "well I guess you just don't want it fixed you want to be unhappy" I pointed out if I wanted a window 8 computer I could of bought one at Wally-world for about $30.00 less and about 80 fewer miles. I don't go to Best Buy anymore and every time this Window 8 POS has a temper tantrum and sulks I remember what lying cheating thieving pond scum Best Buy is.

Frist of all let me say I am 70 years old. Been doing the computer thing ever since the commodore 64 days. Had a laptop crash about 8 months ago and bought a new Toshiba with 7xp . Few days latter they called and said hey you got windows 8 paid for come in and we will upgrade it. So that is what I did. For first three months absolutely hated it. Now after 6 months and finally schooling myself on it things are great. I will say this it is totally different and really takes a lot of learning . Would I go back given the chance no not after finally getting used to it.

Where my wife works, they have an IT company on call. When her desktop quit, she called them about what to buy. They said DO NOT buy windows 8! She ordered one directly from Dell, as she could still get Windows 7 that way!

I upgraded from XP to 8 when Microsoft offered it for $39. Really tried to get used to it but couldn"t - reinstalled XP.

It"s a royal pain. If you look for the tile labeled "desktop", click on that and then it works more like windows 7. That"s all I use. Windows 8 only works well with touch screens and even then it is written by computer geeks who love computers more than we love tractors and can"t imagine that there is more to life than their screens. Everything made sense on windows xp but things do "dead end" on windows 8.

We got a new laptop and it took some getting use to but when it's all you have, you adjust.

If you have two computers and one of them has windows 7 and the other windows 8 it will be harder to get use to windows 8.

We don't have a touch screen but sometimes I wish we did on our windows 8 laptop.

Nope, and I never will, my wife and I agreed our next pc will be an apple, I've had it with windows based pcs. Our apple iPhones are much better than windows.

I bought a new Toshiba laptop from Best Buy a few years ago for $840 some dollars. Would have been money ahead if I had just set fire to the money. The thing never worked right from day one. I finally tore it apart a couple of weeks ago to see what was inside and threw the parts in the trash. The only thing that was worth anything was a tiny little flat magnet, kept that for my tool box. Never buy a Toshiba or Gateway computer again.

Tom I,m sure you know and got it done but how. I was told by the geek squad that there was no going back. I was sick for the first three weeks or so. Doubt that I would now but did you do your removing and reinstalling or have it done?

I figured if I have to learn a new operating system then I will learn linux. It"s frustrating, I"m getting used to it, but it"s free.

(quoted from post at 19:13:02 05/18/13) is anyone using it? is it a pain or is it just me
It's just you ;)

MS will have 8.1 out soon. You will be able to boot to the desktop and it will have a 'Start Button'. It will be a FREE update. The official beta will be out June 26 and the final version sometime in the fall.

If you can't wait pay $5 for "Start 8". http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/

8 has better memory management, boots faster, and is more secure! My wife is definitely not a techie type and she uses 8. I offered to put 7 back on but she likes 8.?

As far as Leo Laporte (Twit.tv).... I enjoy his antics, but he's a Mac fanboy.
A number of years ago I attended a Comdex show in Las Vegas and met Leo and Kate Botello. They hosted a show called "The Screen Savers" on ZDTV. Later Paul Allen bought ZDTV and changed the name to Tech TV.

Mac hardware uses the same processors and chipset as any other 2 or 3 year old computer. OSX has as many holes as swiss cheese. Do you really want to buy from a company that has $160 Billion in cash, with $100 Billion of that tax free outside the US?

Linux is fun to play with and works well. But, sometimes it's difficult to play with. Like drivers for a high end gaming video card.

I haven"t really used it.

It is very very different, new and long learning curve.

It works well on a tablet, as that is what it was designed for.

I hear about 90% hate it if you are using a mouse......

I don"t see corporate America using it as is very quickly, it is a tablet optimized operating system, which you can drop back into business mode of Windows....

About Windows 10 it will be better, they will figure out the best blend of both worlds, and hardware will be brought up to snuff to use what is there.

But, yes, windows 8 is a mostly bad deal.

Paul

joneil, the Linux GNOME 3.0 desktop is just as bewildering as Windows 8. For that reason, if you're using a distribution that uses GNOME 3.0 as default, I recommend you switch to a different desktop, such as MATE, KDE or Cinnamon. (Ubuntu, Mint and Fedora all install GNOME 3.0 as the default desktop.) One nice thing about Linux is that you have such options as multiple desktop environments.

It a Microsoft product which means they try & tell You its better than ever; BUT 38% of PC users are still using XP which is now 11 years old give or take. If it was truly better... People would switch! I am using 8 64 bit, & am finding too many older programs are not even recognizable to the system. I have a financial program that I have on an XP computer because it wont work on Win 8. Spent $300 on it, & am told I need to upgrade to a newer version for it work at an additional $250. Not going to pay it!!!

Every time they re-invent windows it gets worse than the previous. I'm on windows 7 now. I think before I go to windows 8 I will quit using a computer. I don't need anymore aggravation than I already have.

I bought a new laptop last Dec when my other XP laptop went on the fritz. It has windows 8 on it and I have hated it ever since. I have downloaded Classic Shell to bring back the start button but I still have trouble navigating around it.
I have heard that Windows 8.1 brings back the start button but that it takes you right back to the windows 8 screen anyway. It's a piece of junk and I hope Microsoft goes bankrupt because of it.

I learned how to turn a computer on in Feb of 06 with windows XP . All was fine [ well sorta ] until Feb 13 when it had a hard drive failure . Bought a new one that had windows 8 installed and it was a PAIN at first but now I would say it is better . Went with the webroot antivirus and uninstalled the McAfee that came with it . Speeded it up . I won"t give it a 100% rating by any means but the more I get used to it the more I like it .
