Harvesting Garlic

Does anyone here grow their own Garlic? We have a good sized patch of it and am wondering what method you use to prepare it for use in the kitchen. We break the bulbs apart into the multiple pieces, trim each end and then peel the skin off. Is there a faster more efficent way?

We grow all we need for making pickles and dill beans, cooking purposes, and dehydrate a lot and grind it it to powder for seasoning. Don't know any super quick way to shuck it out, other than cracking the cloves and peeling the husks off.

seen chefs on tv break it down to cloves and then just crush the clove with the flat side of their knife. the skin splits away from the crushed clove and its done. Bill

What billmart said... saw a chef, same as he did - and it works great, way better than peeling each one.

Separate the cloves, lay them on their side on cutting board - then lay the flat side of a heavy/wide knife on top of clove and give it a good whap with your other hand.

It does split the skins for easy removal and somewhat crushes the garlic (saving you some chopping at the same time).

searching internet looks like soaking in cold water for at least an hour should help remove the skins easily.

We grow garlic and sell it. I pull it and lay it out on cardboard in the barn to dry for about 3-4 weeks. We then clip the stems and roots off, rub the dirt and dried husks off and bag it up.

Yes there is an easy way. Visit our website, we are the only company that sells an all in one garlic farming implement. It makes raised beds, punches holes for the planting, and undercuts the beds during harvest.
We also sell the only USA made garlic breaking machine.
