Driving me crazy

What is ISO-100 viscosity in oil? I went to change the oil on my compressor and have been using Sae 30w so I didn't want to mix something different and the new oil is marked ISO-100. I then got online and looked for a translation and found almost half say 30w and the other half say 40w. I finally gave up and drained what 30w oil out of the compressor I had put in and just used the ISO-100. I don't understand after more than a century of SAE they had to come up with a new term.

It's nonsense. Funny story my exmark zero turn mowers have a sticker on the hydro tank to use only Mobil 1 15-40 weight oil for the hydro system. Well my mower had a slow leak from the pump for 2 seasons. I got sick of buying Mobil 1 so I just started using 15-40 Diesel engine oil in it, that i have in a 55 gallon drum on hand, worked fine. I finally replaced the pump, went to the dealer and asked for a quart of Mobil 1, he gives me this whole bull story of how you don't use mobile one anymore, Mobil took out some additive and it was runing hydro pumps, ect, now you have to use exmark premium hydro oil. I just laughed and told him I'd been using 15-40 oil in it. He looked red faced. I remember years ago they said never mix synthetic motor oil with non synthetic oil, now they sell it as a blend.??? It's all just bs. I run the proper weight recommended for the engine and that's it, I never had any oil related problems.

SAE specifications are USA standards written by the Society of Automotive Engineers using english units of measure.

ISO specifications are a european standard using metric units of measure. Maybe someone else can remember what ISO stands for.

I've only seen the ISO used on hydraulic oil, at Runnings their brand of hydraulic oil they carry has the ISO weight in big letters on the top of the label and in little letters somewhere below it has what weight it is. ISO-32 is 10w, ISO-68 is 20w, and ISO-100 is 30w.

Hey Steven.

The real reason for the change in designation is that the new oil is a combination of compressor oil and B&D's hair tonic.

ISO is international standards organization, the ISO number is different than the SAE number, you see the ISO numbers used on a lot of industrial oils. IIRC you're right about 100 being 30 weight, we had some older equipment (shaker screens) that required 30 weight non-detergent, didn't want to stock a barrel for just those few machines, our industrial oil dealer crossed it over to 100, we had that in bulk.

The reason for the Mobil specification is that they know it meets their specs and pretty sure they get some kickbacks from it.

Every CNC or machine that uses way lube from what I have ever seen specifies to use Mobil Vactra. Any other maker is good too, but they always call out Mobil Vactra.

Thankyou for the info. After removing the oil from the compressor and putting the ISO-100 in I thought it poured the same as 30w but without knowning for sure I wasn't going to mix it. This was on a gallon bottle of Campbell Hausfield air compressor oil. You would think that way they put measurements on packages in American and metric they would have labeled it 30w also.
