How come when I think it's gonna take a couple of hours to get the tractor ready for the summer, I end up spending three days on the goofy thing?

Fix this, adjust that, oh hey! Maybe I'd better do this other, etc.,etc. :>)

Allan

if you're like me it's because you're suddenly remembering the list of fixes you put off last year as "good winter projects".

Yeah, more than likely. :>)

Plus the fact that I can't afford to be down this summer.........not enough hours in the day.

Agree with you 100%

I power wash all my equipment at Christmas time and put it away. I then start the next week on spring maintenance. I spend Jan-Mar making sure I am ready to plant April 1st. Some years are better than others.

But I give myself 3 months just in case I find something major I need to repair/replace.

Seems to be universal, I do a similar thing to my old ford, decided late last summer, well behind on mowing and whatever else, seemed like an eternity of afternoons of fixing before I could start running it again, the other option was a break down in the field, went just fine, and is ready now because of it, so maybe I won't get behind.

IT is the same issue as taking a tool back to the box. Oh I'll take that light as well same direction, and there is that dang shovel, I'll drop it off. And the garden hose is off the spool. What was I doing when I started walking this way??? Jim I think.

Allan a number of factors come into play. #1 your not as young as you once was.
#2 you always find more wrong with things then you believed was wrong
#3 Good old Murphy's law states if it can go wrong it will etc etc etc.

"not enough hours in the day" - one of my most used expressions.

Second most used is a tie between: "it just never ends" and "NOTHING can ever be easy"

Some day I'll have all brand new equipment and have to find new expressions... right?

A very similar phenomena seems to occur around here, well maybe precisely just that. Sometimes things stay focused and productive, move along other times just as you describe. I think its more prevalent when you have time on your hands, as somehow you convince yourself you can get more done, before you know it, sun is going down.

I guess thats where the word "prioritize" and or time management comes into play LOL !

I think its much worse, the larger the place you have, more things you own especially ones tractors, implements and or power equipment, sooner or later it begins to own you LOL !

I think it is called 'mission creep'.

Personally I would much rather spend time fixing stuff in advance in the shop than lying on my back in the mud (or snow).

It's like that insurance commercial from a couple years ago. You've got gremlins sneaking in and messing around with stuff. Good thing you don't have a motorcycle or they would have pushed it over.

hat will be, "they just don't build them like they used to!"

THree days "when you have time" is one heck of a lot better than being broke down in the field. Gosh I hate field breakdowns!!! Especially in the hay field.

Yep that is why I have 2 balers 3 ways to cut hay and 2 rakes on hand. Plus enough tractors for each piece of equipment. Getting close to haying time so guess I'll be getting things ready soon.

If your anything like me, the older you get the longer it takes to do something. When I plan a project anymore I just double the time it use to take me to do the same thing. Besides, there is nothing wrong with preventive maintenance. Its allot better than being off and gone and having it brake.

It would be worse if you have a boat! Those can take several days to get ready to spend a few hours on the water - then the next time you want to get in the water, it will take you that long, or longer, to get it ready again. And again, and again - until you get disgusted and sell the dang boat.

I thought I was going to be done with remodeling an older trailer house I am living in a year ago February. I am still working on it. Figure maybe another month to go.
