BROKEN DRILL BIT

I was drilling a hole in cast iron and broke a drill bit. 3/16ths. It broke just as it was breaking through and I can't drive it out. I was wondering if a person took and torch and heated it could you just hit the oxy. and blow it out or what other way can you use to remove it. Thanks in advance.

I have had good luck using a torch on broken bits, however a 3/16" may be a little small for that method. Usually you can use a hardened punch to drift the bit backwards to get it out.

Use pointed nose pliers. they will go down the screw channels of the drill bit and then you should be able to unscrew the bit. I have a very small pair of vise-grips that are excellent for this problem.

A center punch will work driving it out from the other side. Ihe partial hole will center the punch and keep it aimed at the point of the broken drill. Jim

As Jim said, try a center punch from the other end first. When I torch something because of broken bolts, bits, or whatever, heat the metal around the broken bolt or bit to expand it away from the bolt or the bit. Try not to heat the bolt or bit because that will expand it as well, and thats exactly what you don't want.

Good luck.
