International 1890 dump truck

I have a chance to pick up an international Lodestar 1890 dump truck for 500 bucks it does Run and everything seems to work with a good title does anyone have any experience with these trucks? would like to maybe make it into a small grain truck and pull a 400 bu wagon behind it. We are a small farm and figure we could build a bed on it to hold 200 bushel

IH always built good rugged trucks it just depends on how it was treated. Not much of a gamble at that price. If you have to worry about DOT inspections look it over good.

actually, i bought an 1890 for 500bucks a number of years ago. it had a gas engine with a jumped timing chain.never considered trying to use it as a truck and fighting with the DOT and the judge. i cut the front off, welded on a hitch and PTO shaft, and it has been the handiest 500 dollar dump trailer you could imagine. -john-

one other item, i welded the front axle solid and welded it under the box in front of the drive axle so its a tandem.also i pulled the inner axles out and cut them off so the differential isnt always turning.

It would be a rare Loadstar that has a cab left on it today... Honestly, if it's some old jalopy with hydraulic brakes... do yourself a favor and leave it where it's at. If it's got S-cam brakes... and it runs... it's probably worth 500. Otherwise I'd do as others suggested... cut the front off and make a trailer.

We had one when I was a kid, old township truck. IT was fairly solid, but we built a well road through a swamp and killed three dump trucks doing it. We called it old smokey- if you parked it leaning to the left, the leaking valve cover would dump oil on the manifold.

Had a V8 and 5+2. Worked well for the 5-6 yard box that was on it. Unless you're on FLAT (like, Platte River valley flat), that's about all it would want.
