Sweetfeet did you get the salt on your asparagus yet? If so can you see any results?

I'm going to spray my dad's two rows with salt water tomorrow after I get off work. I spread 40 lbs of salt on his a week ago and it's showing some results but not as good as I would like to see.

I planted another row of 16 roots of my own this evening and thought of you when I was finished...

I now have 4 rows and one has been in production since 1999 and the other three are new this year. Each row of mine is 35' long. I'll be busy in a few years...LOL

I just planted 16 crowns, half green and half purple. What's the salt for, and how much??

Asparagus is salt tolerant- so use enough to kill the other plants (weeds). Weeds and grass are a real problem with asparagus because its in a bed, sends out runners, and stalks come up everywhere, so you can't weed "between the rows" because there are no rows.

John B.,

Not yet - but maybe this weekend. It has been so cold and wet here the last six weeks cannot even think of anything "gardenish". On May 2 we got 15-18 inches of snow in our area - incredible, but true.

Usually I'd have scallions and radishes by now (or soon)... have not even been able to till the soil yet. Rhubarb is finally popping up after the snow melted this week.

John B.,

Oops, forgot to reply on your planting. Wow! Four rows, 35 feet long? You are going to be busy!!

Your wife will have to figure out a bunch of new recipes... asparagus bread, asparagus jelly... LOL, like they do with zucchini to use up what one cannot eat or freeze.

Regarding salting, I will salt only directly in my plant row, I think. My garden is a "strip garden" with grass in between my rows - so I do not want to kill off my grass either.

FBH44,
My rows are 35ft long each. One row has been in production for many years and I put 40 lbs on it in a years time. One salting in the spring and one in the fall. I've also mixed up some salt water and sprayed it on the grass it's self and that does a good job.
