War of 1812- Havre de Grace in Flames.....

Two hundred years ago the British came up the Chesapeake, and burned Havre de Grace before turning south and attacking Baltimore and Washington. These are some pics of the Havre de Grace watterfront, and the 'Pride of Baltimore', a Baltimore Clipper of the day.

Have you ever read the history of the "Chasseur", the privateer originally called the "Pride of Baltimore" for its exploits? Some good reading, better than most movie plots. Had a rather cheeky captain!

And Fort Mifflin, now in the shadow of the Philadelphia airport, survived the longest, most intense bombardment of American soil in history with few casualties. I believe that Francis Scott Key was watching that when he penned the "Star Spangled Banner".

A few years ago, there was an underground barracks discovered there. It was last used during WW2, and afterward the door covered with dirt and forgotten. The groundskeeper got tired of filling a sink hole so he started digging to try to find where the dirt was going.

If my memory is right, Francis Scott Key was aboard the British Flag Ship watching the bombardment of Fort McHenry at the port of Baltimore

Actually Key was being held prisoner aboard a British troop ship outside Baltimore harbor when he wrote the poem which would later become "The Star Spangled Banner". Havre de Grace is a French term meaning Harbor of Grace. The siege of Fort McHenry is a fascinating piece of history, as is the battle of North Point, where a small unit of Army regulars and the Baltimore Milita stopped the British Army from seizing Baltimore.

Believe it or not, a flat land Iowa farm boy like me has been to Havre de Grace. I visited there in 1964 when I was stationed at Aberdeen Proving Grounds. Nice place to visit. Dale
