IH 300 tractor

930 case

New User
I am looking at purchasing an IH 300 compact tractor and was wondering if anybody had any info on what the positives and the negatives are on this tractor.Thank you

IH 300 compact?? Do you maybe mean a 300 utility which sits low like the old fords??? If yes if it does not have power steering most of them are bears to steer. I have one here and with out power steering they steer very hard and that was one problem they had

If your asking about the 300 utility I agree with old. I have a 350 utility with a loader on it and the steering is not that great no let me restate that it's terrible. Mine did not have power steering on it when I got but have since install it and it's still not that good with the loader on it. I would look at something different unless this tractor is really cheap. Parts for the utility's or not nearly as common as for the other IH tractors. I would trade mine for a good 800 series Ford in a second. I've held on to it because it's the only tractor I have with a loader Just my 2 cents

They also had poor brakes. I never saw a utiliy diesel. Besides they were ugly but like the farmer's daughter , they were good workers. Worked on two farms that had them.

Thank you guys for the info it was very helpful, this tractor is the low profile it doesn't have power steering, it has a loader with larger front tires almost the size of a truck tire. My second option is a 302 john deere industrial but the difference in price is quite a bit. Let me know what your thoughts are on the John Deere. Thanks!!

Your right about that. You stop mine by dropping the loader to the ground or running into something. Just can't make myself spend any more money on it their are better tractors out there

930 case, I like the others are assuming you are talking of IH 300 Utility.

I agree the steering and linkage and front axle wear points are the negatives.

Positives are strong engine, same as Farmall (Row Crop)300.

Hopefully it has Fast Hitch, T/A,and Live P.T.O. These were also all positives but were all options also.

The 300 was only offered in gas and lpg. The 350 which followed the 300 had diesel option which was rare and highly collectible but not real practical as the Continental Diesel engine is very hard to get parts for.

Most replacement parts are still available for the 300. Styeering and T/A(torque amplifier)b can costly to repaire if tractor has been used hard, lots of hours, and abused.

Steering can be made to live with, without loader, with adjustment, proper tires, etc.

Where are you located? I've got a 1020 gas John Deere sitting here that I've pretty much retired. Has a heavy Freeman loader with a hydraulic bucket. I bought a front wheel assist and quit using this one.

We had two of them when I was a kid. They are cold natured, hard to start, hard to steer, hard to stop, touchy for engine tune, and ride rough. Other than that they were durable and did last a long time :) pos

What's wrong with "none of the above?"

Is there someone holding a gun to your head telling you to buy one of these tractors or else? I didn't think so.

As a useful loader tractor the 300 is going to be iffy without power steering. Power steering is tough to find and expensive and usually worn out.

If the Deere is out of your price range, pass on both and find something else.

I didnt say the deere was out of my price range,I
just wanted to know if any body had some info on it.

I don't know anything specific to the Deere 302, but in general an
industrial will stand up better to the loader duty.
It will most likely have power steering which is pretty much a must have.
At least I think so. More and more every day.
Down side of an industrial is that often they did not have a PTO or 3 PT hitch.
Again, I don't know if that model Deere would have them or not, just things
to look for if you might need to use implements.
3 PT hitch implements are plentiful, the fast hitch implements for the Farmalls
are still around, but they were brand specific.

Thank you very much for the info. The 302 does have
pto and 3 point which is must for me. Cost on the
deere is 6500 verses the IH 300 at 2500. I just have
not owned a john deere always have had cases and
internationals I guess I will be making a change. Thanks again.
