Farmhand Grinder/Mixer

My neighbor has a Farmhand grinder/mixer that he is going to sell for a very good price, if i get a 3/4 or 7/8 inch screen for it, does a grinder/mixer crack corn pretty good? I know some of you guys said i need a roller mill, but for the price of this i can't pass it up. I think it is a model 815 going to look at it tomorrow to make sure.

It will crack the corn but it will not be as uniform in particle size as what would come from a roller mill. You will have everything from whole kernels to powder. However, many people have fed a lot of livestock without roller mills and have done just fine. We run a Lorenz hammer mill with a 5/8" screen and feed mostly ear corn through it. It breaks things up really well, almost too fine, but it is what we have so we manage our feeding accordingly to avoid digestive upsets in our cattle. If I was happy with the price and could accept some variability in the ground corn, I would go for it.

I do half corn half wheat in my mixer grinder for hogs. Mine is a Deere. I can get very uniform particle size if it feeds into the mixer at a steady rate. Mine has a gate that you adjust in the feeder trough to make it feed in more slowly. On mine that's the key.

I wouldn't hesitate to do it. I have noticed that brand doesn't hold its value like the others - not sure if that is due to reliability or parts availability or anything.

See how many times the hammers have been turned.
