Tree Cuttin Update

Well after a lot of lookin and figuring and cutting the multaflora rose bushes, I got to cutting it down. The first pic shows a better look how the tree grew and the following slows how tall and how it was leaning that was on my mind while starting to cut it. I notched it (looking at the tree) to the right side about 2 feet up and 10 inches in. Now I hoped what would happen was it gose over slowly hits the big limb and roles over to the left. At least I hoped it would.
As I started the back cut at an angle to the notch, About 1/3 of the way cut it started to pop! Time to beat feet and get out of the way! Pop Pop and it slowly starts going over, I mean slow! Right down on the big limb and slowly rolled over to the left without hardly making a sound. I was so glad it went over slowly and didn't kick back or come sideways at me like the one did yesterday. My chain saw has a 32 inch bar in it and just went through that big limb when I cut it off.
Hard part over now its time to cut it up into pieces to move it with the loader so it can be cut up at a later date. I am sure glad have 2 saws to use the big one will ware you out in the sun. I think it took longer to pile the brush up than it did to cut it down and up. The stump and butt of the log aint pretty, But its all said and done now, And no broken bones or injuries! Not bad for 4 hours of work. Maybe I will cut a dead one tomorrow? Bandit

Great job, glad u did it safely! Is that big stihl a ms 460, or bigger, I've got the 460 with a 20 inch bar, must be pretty heavy with a 32 inch bar! Lol

good job and like you said; now the work begins. any idea how old it is. of all the oaks, the pin oak is my favorite.

From what I can see from the pictures, it very well could have jumped off the stump and chased him. The notch was not deep enough. I'm surprised that tree didn't split, and kick straight back at him. It started to. He was lucky.

Good job! If you had wanted to hire someone or feed beer to a friend to take it down, you wouldn't have needed to post here. Most of us here help each other to git'er done ourselves. Glad it worked the way some of us suggested.

I agree with the depth of the notch. Too shallow, but at least it didn't "barber chair" and cause further danger cutting it loose from the stump.
Lolren, the Acg.

Your damm lucky, If it would of split it would of took your head off' btdt with a maple, It didn't go over slow, it split and took the chain saw out of both my hands, threw it 15 feet from Me. If I would of had My head down there by the cut it would off took off My head!! Someone said for you to look on U tube last night so I didn't Say Any thing, BUT I will NOW!! LOOK ON U TUBE!! LOOK FOR BORE CUTTING TREES. Glad it didn't split, Real glad you are ok!!

I agree about the shallow notch. The heavy unbalance of the tree shows in the amount that wasn't cut when the tree fell, could easily cause the tree to split.

That is why you need a good notch in the other side. Most of the time it needs to be 1/3 of the diameter of the tree.

Its a 391 that my son bought new, Why I will never know. Its a really good saw but it will ware you out in a hurry so I switch to the 180 to do the trimming with. Bandit

You aint kidding! I think I could have beat Jesse Owens getting out of there! This is one of those trees that I really don't like to fool with, But sometimes you have to. I was worried about it barber chairing on me big time or kicking back or going sideways because of that big limb. I just hope I never have another one like it. Bandit

I know what you mean, after 1 tank of gas threw my 460 I'm getting tired! Lol, I also have a 180, and a 034 which isent as bad as the 460 weight wise. You'll have some nice firewood from that tree!

To tell you the truth I did look it up on YouTube and watched several different ones too. I thought about what they had said on there and seeing the trees they cut I could see how good this works. However with a tree with all the weight on one side and a 50 foot limb pulling hard on the tree and it leaning as bad as it was I really don't think there is a good way to bring it down without a problem. Any other time the notch would have been bigger but with this tree it was going one way no matter how it was cut no matter what. Only question was what would it do when it hit the ground, Kick back or twist sideways or both. I just didnt think bore cutting would have worked that good with a really unbalanced tree like this. I am allways open to new ideas and willing to try new things but not this time. Another tree I will try it and see how good it works for me. Bandit

Well all I can say is you are obviously more experienced than most thought and with some common sense and the forethought to buy the RIGHT brand of equipment. With everything going for you , you had a pretty good idea of the outcome. Thinking twice and cutting once.

When I said it went over slow that was no joke. My camera is an old cheep digital I got years ago. Consider this, Tree pops I run back with the saw(about 25 feet) set it down and pick up the camera case take it out and turn it on. Walk back close to the tree and wait 10 seconds for the camera to do its thing, take picture wait 15 seconds take second picture wait 15 seconds take third picture. So it took a 60 to 90 seconds for the tree to go over slowly. I am sure glad it did and everything turned out all right. Bandit

My 2 cents is... The notch was deep enough. It just was too closed. Your notch should have close to a 90 deg angle to it. Cut the bottom up at 30 and the top down at 60. You do not want the notch to pinch shut before the tree hits the ground. Then you want your back cut to come in about 1" above the point of the notch. On a tree like that I would leave about 2" for the hinge. That said practice bore cutting. Once you've done it a few times you'll wonder why you haven't been doing that all along. Trees like that are where bore cutting really shines.

I wont cut trees like that. That could have shot backward.you aint fast enough to get out of the way.

Dont leave sharp splinters on the stump.A logger fell on a stump with splinters and bled out, died on the stump.
