John Deere 40T Serial Number

Hey it's Bryce. I have had a John Deere 40T for quite sometime now and just yesterday I started tearing it down for restoration. This particular tractor runs and drives great. I was able to get it at an auction for $450, which I think was a pretty good steal! The main reason I bought it is because it has a single front wheel. The serial plate is gone, but I a determined to figure out a year, and I would also love to know how many of these tractors with a single front wheel were made? Is this as rare of a tractor as I have been told, or is it just rare in my area? Any info would be great! Thanks! Bryce

There is a flat spot on a casting below the generator that has a engine number. With help from the Area Service Manager for your John Deere Dealer, you can get a reproduction tag with the correct number. If you need a picture of the engine number location, send me an email. Email is open.

There's no record of single front wheel tractors. The front ends would all interchange.
Yours doesn't match the tractor,it's probably been added.

Look on flange where bolts to bolster there will be a casting number. The letter it starts with tell what single front was for.

According to my JD buyers guide there were some 40T-N tractors produced from the factory. The N signifying a narrow front. This book rates your tractor as a 4 star tractor as far as collectability is concerned. But this book is about 20 years old so I'd say the tractor is a 5 star tractor which is as high as the star rating goes. The first serial number in 1953 was 60001. The first serial number in 1954 was 72167 and the first serial number in 1955 was 75531. I hope you find this information helpful. rr

Thanks for the help guys! I found that the engine for my tractor was made on 4/5/54. So I am now a firm believer that my tractor is a 1954 John Deere 40T. I got the engine number and called my local JD Dealer ( Pape ) The guy told me, "Sorry kid, there is nothing I can do." WHAT?!?!?!! SO, I went to the jd40.com and was able to use his chart. Thanks again guys! Bryce
