Question for Ford Truck Guys

BIL looking at 06 Ford Crewcab Superduty (XLT?)/
6.0 Diesel/5R110 Autotrans/4WD (also has manual hub disconnect)/full power cloth seats/tow pkg./
integrated brake controller/140kmi./standard CD-AMFM-cassette/good heat&air/brand new "D" tires/
cruise control. Has 5TH hitch rails and air bags. Looks like it hauled some weight. GVWR-10k#. Very clean/good Carfax. Seller asking $19k. I'm not a Ford guy so don't know if this is reasonable or trouble, considering miles vs 6.0. Inputs/comments welcome. Thanks.

This part of the country that would be full dealer retail. Not a bad truck and good miles.
Individual sales or auction should be a little less.

The later 6.0 was a better engine, and odds are that would be good for him, but that is entirely too much money for any 6.0

I can only speak from a basic perspective such as......A good friend of mine had an 03 Ford F250 Diesel, 80k miles, sold it for $13k, I could be off a few hundred bucks on the actual selling price, he sold it in the summer of 2011. This was the crew cab I think. Some body rust on it. (overall a good truck for $13,000)
Is the engine the IH powerstroke? I do know of major engine bills when stuff takes a dump on the power stroke motors. I really think that $19k for a 6 year old truck with 140k miles is high.

Was it the dealer or the previous owner who put D rated tires on it? If it was the PO I"d walk. That needs load range E tires, what else and how badly were other repairs skimped on?

WAY TOO MUCH! You can't give them trucks away around here. Nobody wants them. A early 2003 and down 7.3 will bring double what a 6.0 will all day around here. The truck you mention specifically, would be lucky to fetch $8000 on a wholesale auction as no dealer around here would even try to sell it. If your BIL needs a diesel then look cummins or duramax.

I would run from any 6.0 Ford diesel. I know some claim that the later ones are OK but you are gambling. It is not uncommon for multi thousand dollar repair bills on those 6.0s.

Then the 19K is on the high end of what it is worth. It would have to be perfect and have some warranty for that price around here. I do mean dealer warranty.

Thanks to all who responded so fast. Majority supported my gut feeling that the 6.0 was somewhat problem prone, expensive to fix, and truck price was high. Not brand bashing, all have their problems, but I"ve been very happy with my 5.9 Cummins for ~185kmi. Thanks again.

I just saw an ad in the paper from a Chevy dealer and brand new trucks cost less than that. Probably Apples to Oranges but 19 grand for a used anything is too much.

Is it blue and gray? except for the tires it sounds just like mine. Mine has only 69,000 on it and I would be really tickled to get that much for it. Just recently I was looking at what people are asking for them. Way less than $19,000. I'm hoping to be able to get mine stolen. Car fax tells you only the repairs that were reported, it could have had plenty of work done that was not reported.

I have the 7.3. A friend of ours has the 6.0, he said you can buy something to eliminate the egr valve, when his went bad it leaked antifreeze into the turbo, or some such. So he bypassed it. I also saw that another big problem was a bad radiator cap, by the time the system reached its pressure the coolant was already over heated. I guess there a gamble.

Run from the 6.0 and run fast and far!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It"s not just the EGR but injectors, head gaskets, and Turbo all go out routinely. I spent $ 7,500 !!!!!!! Making mine right. There are multiple class action lawsuits over the 6.0.,.

There were folks with 6.0 that had no trouble and others had all kinds of trouble.

It is a crap shoot.

I had a 6.0 and loved it, but traded it at 125K

Figure out what it would cost to put a 12v Cummins in the truck... then decide what you want into the truck... then make an appropriate offer.
I would not own a 6.0 or 6.4L powerjoke for any money.

My 06 f350 crew cab dually 4x4 is the one of the nicest driving trucks I've every driven. It's been parked for a year now because I refuse to fix the 6.0 at a cost of $2500 in parts and if you can't remove the cab it's very difficult to work on. I also refuse to pay somebody to work on it because no matter how it's repaired it will never be reliable. It will be getting a 12 valve cummins when I get the chance to do it. I paid $17,000 2 years ago. It had about 90,000 miles on it when I bought it, it has just over 100,000 now.

Friend of mine asked me three years ago about a 94 6.0 . I said run. He bought it anyway / Last summer had it and trailer towed three times in two weeks. SWMBO said "sell this tord" They dumped the whole outfit and flew home to SD.
He called me and said "don't bother to say I told you so. He said his wife kept saying, "Didn't Gordo tell you not to buy this pos?">

Im a superduty guy and you cant pay me enough money to own a SIX POINT OH SHI*

Im fortunate enough to own an '03 with a 7.3 in it and i will keep it til either me or the truck is dead.

I know lots of people who own 6.0's and they either have zero problems with them, or everything under the sun goes out.

Head studs, head gaskets, EGR coolers, turbos and injectors.........pretty bad list if you ask me.

"It will be getting a 12 valve cummins when I get the chance to do it."

Do you plan to put the cummins in the Ford, or use the Cummins with the Dodge wrapper?

well I went and did it . 05 crewcab dually 4x4 6.0 I had in shop . Bank repo spotless , all bells and whistles. oil pump bad , motor not locked up . suspect needle bearing from roller lifter went though oil pump. Pulling cab , rebuilding motor in my shop , doing any updates. Taking tuner off! Know it"s a gamble ,but got the truck for $2000 . Big job ahead and will be posting pics of progress .

if your goin to do the work be money ahead down the road and do the ARP head studs, EGR cooler delete and get a new turbo. fix those things now and you'll be in pretty good shape

I will be putting a 12 valve in it with a built dodge auto trans and transfer case.

The 7.3 were the best. The 6.0 were the worst. Most of the 6.4 were okay if you did an EGR delete. My 6.7 should have the license plate, " 013 MPG". I put a Spartan, AFE air box, and 5" pipe on it and picked up MAYBE 1/2 MPG. But it gets better MPG than my N14, but it is hauling 80K.
