O/T Butternut squash

Can this year's Butternut squash be grown on the same land it was grown on last year? Dad said no but I'm skeptical. This is the FIRST day the garden is dry enough to work and plant. I've been jealously looking at the the pics posted here showing gardens up and growing. LOL Jim
 
They will grow but there are a lot of disease that attack melons. So for the average gardener it is easier to rotate them rather than spray for disease control.

Tomatoes are kind of like that to a smaller degree. I raise mine in dirt from around the hay feeders. I scoop up a loader bucket or two and put it where I raise my tomatoes. They have new dirt each year.

Something to try on your squash is to spread out a large piece of black plastic and just put a hole for each plant. It keeps the weeds down under the vines and also helps conserve moisture. It may also help with the diseases.
