wife needs a washing machine any sugestions

To late in the day to call a friend who does this for a living what is good now days. I do know he will not recommend Magtag since that company has gone down hill in the last 5 or so years. He sells appliances and repairs them so he is pretty good as to what is good now. If I remember I could call and ask hime tomorrow if you would like to find out what is now top of the line and should last

When ours took a crap, the wife went to Menards or Home Depot,I forget which, but she bought the cheapest Amana she could get. Only has 2 knobs on it,no buttons. Has one knob for the off/on timer and one to select two different load sizes. That thing seems to be bulletproof. Go for simple!

SWMBO decided she needed a new washer & dryer a few years back and chose the new front load high efficiency type by Frigidaire...got all the whistles and bells - that she doesn"t use.

We"re on county water and I will say that the new washer cut our water bill by about half! The new machine only uses about a table full of detergent per wash load, too!

whatever you decide DO NOT get a whirlpool front loader. they are expensive and when (i do mean when) the drum bearings go they are about impossible to fix and get them to run right. rrlund is right, get the cheapest you can find. they clean the clothes better and when they break you don't feel as bad replacing them.

I have a bottom of the line Whirlpool that came with new home I bought in 1990. 23 years, one dealer repair. Two sets of pawls I installed. It's a top loader with THREE bttons, size, temp, and time.
Does it matter family of one, two loads per week (not always?)

I think washers are like autos some times you get a good one and slometimes you get a lemon. I have a GE front loader so far so good going on thee years. The only problem with this washer is the door needs to be kept open, or mold will form on the door seal. Just don't slam the front door when you are peed off at something. This will break a little switch on the door, and it will cost 200.00 for the repair. Stan

If she's ina hurry,

he best flat rock in the Mississippi is up for grabs....seeing as my darling is outta town.

All kidding aside, we have our own drainfield, and the side-load washing machine usues very little water, which makes very little septic waste.

I like end-load machines and can't do a lot of recommending as per brand.

Cheapest one that you can find that has all the settings that will be used and as few extra settings as possible.

Try to ovide touch screens, if only because the more that are sold with out, the longer the ones without will be sold. Why? Because for the blind, touch screens don"t work to well, but there still people, and deserve to be able to do as may of the tasks that anyone else can. I say this as my mother is blind, and uses ever appliance in the house, all of which are without touch screens. You wouldn"t beleave though how hard ovens are becoming to find without (sorry, that"s slightly off topic but...)

Also, in the frount/top load debate, consider you physical geometry: will the door still open in your space? IIRC, my parents lack the space (house designed without laundry room) for a frount door to open, but there is space to stand and load the top load washer.

Also a family of five- About 7-8 yrs ago got the Whirlpool Duet HE front load. It runs at least one load a day and, not to sound like a salesman, it literally uses 1/3 the water of the old style. And spins super fast so clothes come out nearly dry. I'm as old fashioned as they come and I learned to like this one. A slight learning curve is needed. I thought I lost a drum bearing a year or two ago and there are very good youtube videos showing how to change the drum bearing-it can be changed. It wasn't a bearing, it had eaten one of my dress socks, rubbed it around the outside of drum, and left it in the treasure trap in the drain, (a built in feature).

We bought a front load Samsung. Works great, uses very little water and clothes come out close to dry because spin cycle is so fast. Get a front load washer with direct drive. Some of the belt drive models have balance problems.

As others have said the front loaders use 1/3 the water saves on pumping heating and soap and sewer.

I just put tub bearings and seals into my Kenmore Elite Oasis. About 6 years old and washing clothes for family of 7. Ran it hard but paid a premium for it. If I was to do it again I'd look at Speed Qween residential series. I think 3 year warrenty with kids will put that washer through it's paces well inside of the 3 year warrenty.

We got a GE front load 2 years ago, wife's happy with it. We replaced our 1980 GE washer to use less water. I don't know how long this one will last thought.

There was guy that repairs them for Sears on here a while back, and he said only buy a Bosch made washer. The rest are just waiting to break down.

There have been many complaints of front loaders not emptying properly, leaving a pool of water in the bottom. If not used regularly, the water turns bad and the washer stinks and so does your laundry.

Take a look at Fisher-Paykel. We have had one for 6 years and no problems.I can replace any thing on the washer myself. The control panel is held in with 4 screws and 5 plugs in back of panel and they are all differant shapes so you can't mix them up.It uses half the water that the name brands use.

Had a front loader last time .The wife had a notebook and notes and did all this research . I was busy working and she handled it .Kenmore . After 12 years it failed due to the bearing holding the drum. Then I started thinking a top loader does not hang off the bearing but rests down on it. I was in K=Mart and found out the appliance department was being phased out for pet supplies section. Got a 625 dollar machine for 400 [no box] .When I loaded into the truck I could see underneath how flimsy it was and how small the motor was . Actually that was the second one the first I returned because when my wife did the first load it did not wet the top of the clothes and she went online and read bad reviews .First the manager said he would send a repair guy. But I didn't want that and got full refund which was not any argument because they really din't care about the appliance department anymore.Years ago I used to walk in an appliance store with my wife and when the saleman came over . I'd just say cheapest one you sell. In present day that can be very poor of a choice. But I vote for top loader due to bearing stress. Forgot what kind we got but went back for a dryer before they sold out and again got a 600 dollar machine for 400. They can sell alot more pet supplies than appliances. Althougfh I see there are some in the box still at that K-Mart pushed aside the new pet isle.
The sheetmetal o0n the dryer is so thin I dented it twice bring it home in my truck.
Wife just said new one is a Kenmore and works good. I'm not allowed to do laundry due to turning stuff pink.

i glad it"s summer time out, so i can go down to the river to do my winter washing,,lol,,i have a sears heavy duty 70 model, h2o pump went out, it was replaced 25 yrs ago.. hope they still have them, new machines are junk and probably won"t last like this one has.

As a 16 year old in 1959 I helped deliver the last Gasoline machine our local maytag shop sold.
There was one still in use at a local guest ranch a few years ago. the one I delivered may still be in use I'll have to check.

See my earlier post regarding my Whirlpool. I never paid any attention to water remaining in the bottom and you cant see it cuz the drum is perferated and the water is below that. When I thought my bearing was failing I finally had the oportunity to turn the drum by hand and low and behold water was swishing. I thought it was normal. Then my bearing noise quit and water was on the floor. Alas, more was in the drum. So I popped the front thinking a pump was failing and then I found the drain trap/screen. I opened to see and there was my sock in shreds causing the backup of water in the tub to remain. Cleaned it out and no more swishing. Is this the way all of em are? No but mine was.

Stick with the Maytag.

Bought one in 1974 while married to <s>failed</s> <s>former</s> first wife.

Outlasted first wife for 14 years and still working for favorite wife for the last 25 years.

Maytag no longer exists "cept for the name now owned by whatever Whirlpool is called these days.

international1606, Pick up a Thrifty Nickel adds paper, or look on C.L. and find a pair for about $400.(nice well cared for machines) I have yet not to have a set get at least 4 to 5 yrs min.
(Formula... # of Washer loads done/week @ $1.25/ load + # of dryer loads @ 1.50 = $spent / week X 52 =yearly cost IF you used a Washiteria all the time. Check your local washiteria to see what your cost would be / week then Divide $400 or so on a used machine. That figure is weeks it takes to pay for the used machine @ Washiteria rates. Them price a new machine a figure how long it takes to get it paid for an start saving money)
I just refuse to spent the Ridiculous prices they ask for new ones.
Found out last fall that Maytag is no longer building their own machines. They are not the same company at all, really they closed up shop a year or so ago. the new ones no better than the rest.
I have done just as I described above and had 4 sets of machines over the last 23 yrs. I am Way more ahead that you might think! Hope this helps.
Later.

I have been told by some, and on this site....."DO NOT BUY A FRONT LOAD WASHING MACHINE" Get top load, cheaper and longer lasting.

Whirlpool extra large tub top load. The lasted me about 20 years with 4 kids. Haven't had but about 4 my entire life and the first was used and I had to put a water pump in it. They have changed the workings in todays models. Current model is about 8 years old and going strong.

If I remember what the salesman told me Bosch makes some dishwashers in US,LG in Korea and pretty much everything else is made in China.I assume washing machines are the same.I bought a front load Frigidaire set at least 10 years ago and it lasted through 3 teenage boys so I am well pleased.Replaced with an LG front load about a year ago when the old one started making a noise like the drum bearing was going.I am on an old and under sized tile bed so I really have to be careful of water use.

When the Mrs and I set up housekeeping we started with used appliances and replaced with Admiral as they failed then when money was a little more plentiful I replaced everything with Maytags thinking I was buying the same top of the line stuff my parents had.Big mistake.Maytags are not what the used to be.I am very impressed with the engineering of the LG stuff.Haven't had it long enough to know how it will stand up.

I found a Kenmore that had no spin tube bearings or seals in it.Came that way new.We got good service from a Whirlpool but the washer with parts missing came from the Whirlpool factory. When I did appliance service the whirlpool was a good machine.Maytag ran on ad bs,not performance.Packard Motor Co said Ask The Man who Owns One.I would change that to Ask The Man Who Has To Fix Them.

I found a Kenmore with no spin tube bearings or seals.8 parts missing.Sears service man said there was nothing wrong with the washer.

I have one for sale, but the postage would scare you!!
They don't make them like they used to......
